Hi everyone. New to this forum. Diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation just this weekend, 19 hours in hospital assessment unit, & treatment with Bisoprolol (10mg). Am on 10mg daily now, and have taken today's. Heart is still way too fast though - 90-110 resting. Any idea when it should revert to normal? This is scaring meThank you.

What a difficult situation to suddenly find yourself in. I was told if taken as a PIP for SVT/tachycardia that it would take 20-30 minutes to work, but when taken daily for ectopics it could be 2-3 months — but not in my case. Obviously you can’t wait months if you’re in AFib, that’s ridiculous. I’m also a newbie to AFib but seems I’m of the paroxysmal type and so far I’ve had some success with taking an extra Bisoprolol tablet as a PIP when it happens. I’m surprised you haven’t been offered an anti arrhythmic drug if you were in hospital. Did they advise you to go back if it didn’t resolve within a certain time/number of days? Or phone 111? You definitely need some kind of follow up, especially as you’re only just diagnosed.

Im not mefically trained this is just my experiencefrom my wifes vondition.

She is on Bisoprolol, but its more to reduce frequency and intensity of attacks not to bump her back into NSR. In her case, medical intervention either via medicines or shock will not put her back in NSR, but her heart will eventually return to NSR. That can be in a few hours, or worst case so far 2 weeks.

I think 10mg is the maximum for Bisoprolol so if your resting HR is still above 100 you need to discuss with your doctor whats the plan going forward.

Good luck and i hope they find the right medication to give you the best QoL.

Hi it took weeks before I noticed a difference but that was for palpitations. I would check back with the cardiologist or doctor for time scales with AF. Sorry can’t be anymore help to you.

I have premature ventricular beats. Beta blockers are meant to reduce them along with blood pressure and heart beats. I.25 mg Bisoprolol ( daily) got rid of them for about a year and reduced BP and heart beats. The Bisoprolol took about 4 weeks to work though now my ectopics have come back and my heart beat has risen though Blood Pressure is ok.

So yes it can take a while to work. Though why things are not explained better by doctors is a puzzle. Good luck.

Hello Kate. I'm 58 and have had AF for 10 years. My experience is that beta blockers often don't bring my heart rate down, especially if I've had to go to A&E for a bad episode. So they may not work reliably for you either. At one point I took bisoprolol as a daily preventative for about six weeks while waiting to see a cardiologist and I was barely able to get out of bed -- low blood pressure, low heart rate, zero energy. If you find it has that effect on you, ask for a different prescription. Good luck.
