Bournemouth 10k one year after surgery

Just wanted to share my experience especially to those who are due or very recently had surgery

June 2023 I was admitted to hospital with acute aortic valve dilation and needed open heart surgery to replace the valve and repair the root

I was in hospital for seven weeks, nothing but thanks to all the nurses , doctors, caterers….I thought the food was very good! at the two hospitals that looked after me, Salisbury and Southampton , discharged to recover at home ( definitely the best place ) but I was lucky enough to have my lovely wife to look after me, you then have a period of around six to eight weeks of recovery then start to sleep and feel much better ,

If you are offered rehab I strongly recommend you take it up , my experience was with a class once a week with others in similar not necessarily the same surgery as you and trained nurses / volunteers helping you back on the road to recovery

A couple of months back my daughter mentioned she was running the Bournemouth 10k in aid of the BHF and suggested I also join in , I have run a few marathons in my time most recent was the London and Berlin in the same year 2016 but thought my running days were over , I took up the challenge and with as much care to training as possible ( listening to your body ) I can now run 10k around 70 minutes and ready for the race in October 😊

Wishing everyone who is just about to or in recovery after heart surgery a good and speedy recovery , as soon as you can start exercising and join the rehab you will feel better faster and meet others with similar circumstances. Good Luck 😊
