always had good hearing but now struggling to hear if people speak quietly or have their backs to me. GP very quick at referring me for hearing test which found my hearing was within normal limits & hearing aids won't help. Am now waiting for Consultant appointment with ear, nose and throat.

You will get different results from hearing tests depending on who carries them out! If you go to a high street chain then, yes, you do need hearing aids. If you go to the NHS then, no, your hearing's OK at the moment, you don't need them! So a second opinion might be worth getting.
It is also worth checking that your ears aren't full of wax and getting any cleared before you see the ENT man.
I totally agree with MarkS. Get a second opinion. Depending on your health area some cut backs prevent them dispensing hearing aids when you're borderline. I was lucky the NHS diagnosis was exactly the same as Boots (and so incidentally were the hearing aids I got.) If you are struggling to hear then persevere. Good luck.

That's good you've had the all clear on the hearing side, everything working as it should..
could just be you haven't recovered fully from a bad cold & need some additional medicine of some sort.. hopefully anyway..
try not to worry, at least you know your hearing is all good!
