Looking for advice please.. My Dad has worn NHS hearing aids for yours and over the years his hearing has got worse and worse to the point that the hearing aids do little to help.
We are looking at going private to see if there are more suitable ones out there. Does anyone have any recommendations on companies or models to go for? They are pricey so want to make sure we do our research first.
Thanks.

My Dad also wore hearing aids and his hearing got worse. He wanted to go private but I persuaded him to go back to the NHS who fitted him with digital ones which were better. What I did not understand at that point was that the settings can go over time so it may be that your father’s are not now on the correct setting for what was his hearing loss if he has not been to Audiology recently. In this area we have to ask our GP for a referral for a further hearing test and this should be done at least every three years or if you feel that your hearing has changed. This have found out through my own hearing deteriorating over the last two years.
I would ask for a further hearing test by NHS and that should bring aids with the correct settings and possibly newer aids. I now have excellent NHS hearing aids but my journey has made me wish that I’d known more when Dad was alive so that it could have been better for him.
Thanks for your help, he has been back to get his hearing aids checked and they re-set his hearing aids from time to time. I don’t think he has been offered digital ones so I will try going down that route first. Thanks! 🙂
If you think private have something better to offer then look at a recent article in WHICH magazine July 2018 which has a good independent analysis of the private market. Local independent providers came out best value for money and staff knowledge. Many private businesses offer exactly the same aids as the NHS ones so you need to know exactly what you are paying for and remember its not just the cost of the assessment and aids, you need to get batteries and have the aids service regularly and that is all free on the NHS but paid for privately.
