Hi ladies

I had a hysterectomy 14 months ago due to a womb full of precancerous polyps and five external fibroids. Got thrown into immediate menopause and been taking hrt (25 mg patches twice weekly) ever since.

Before my op I lost a lot of weight. My average weight is around 9st (I’m a small built person, it’s not vanity) and before my op I was just above 8 st.

Since my op I’ve gone up as heavy as 9st 10 - so that’s nearly 2 stone in just over a year.

I am trying soooooo hard to get back to below 9 and a half stone but can’t get below 9st 7 no matter what I do! I know it may not sound like a lot but if I hit 10 stone then I just pile it on and it’s not good for me.

I walk my dog 2 miles daily, and to work/back. I do aqua aerobics twice a week. I swim 20 lengths plus weekly. I work in a primary school so am constantly on my feet. Food wise: I’ve tried weight watchers; I’m on Noom at the moment; I’ve had Hello Fresh rather than the odd takeaway/meal out; I eat lots of fruit/veg; only drink water. I’ve even been to the docs and had a tonne of blood tests and everything is working fine - no diabetes, no anaemia, no bad thyroid ....

I’m now wondering is it the after affects of a hysterectomy???? Is it hormones?? Is it hrt?? I just can’t think of anything else 🤷‍♀️

Anyone else had this experience?

Hi Katmatty

I’m new to the forum and I joined because I wanted to ask the same question. I had a total hysterectomy last year and since then I’ve gained over a stone in weight. Like you I’m very active, I go to the gym three times a week as well as running, and I eat healthily. I had already gone through menopause before the hysterectomy, but I went through it again afterwards, I’m guessing due to no oestrogen now - the second menopause symptoms were awful, but the hrt patches I was given brought me out in a rash! I don’t know how to tackle the weight gain, nothing I do seems to work 😢

Hi Katmatty, I think I remember you from the previous forums around the time of our ops ? Good to hear from you.

I’m no expert but I think it must be HRT related mustn’t it ? It sound like you are doing everything else right. Maybe talk to your doctor or another expert about trying a different HRT ?

I’ve been on HRT tablets since 12 weeks after the op and have had no problems with them at all. They stopped all the menopause symptoms and I’m definitely fitter and leaner now than I was before my op - helped by the fact I don’t have a huge fibroid mass In my abdomen any more of course!

I know a lot of people don’t like the idea of tablets or can’t take them, but I think there’s lots of different types of patches and gels too ? Don’t be afraid to keep trying to find one that works better for you.

Yes, I remember you! We had our ops similar times. So good to hear from you and that you are doing so well. I am too, apart from the weight lol. I’m coming to the same conclusion as you. My hrt runs out in a few weeks anyway and I’m due an annual check (though may well be over the phone with the current situation lol) so will talk to my GP. Keep well xxx
