Shocking amount of salt in some "healthy" high street vegan foods.

Hi everyone,

This shows the problem that we have with some high street foods and some of these are claimed to be healthy when they contain more than our recomended daily salt intake in one meal, the worst being a plant based pizza that had the same amount of salt as 23 bags of crisps.

Please see:

Really food manufacturers have to take responsibilty for what they put in our food and we have to be aware if what we are really eating. Thats what I feel.

This is very apt with it being the theme of Salt Awareness Week.

Sadly Jerry, a lot of the Vegan food is really no heathier. I always check the ingredients and I am left thinking do I really want to eat this at all (or pay the price they are asking), its a bit like with alot of the free from stuff.

That amount of salt in a pizza, is just crazy. I do wonder if the food industry is in cahoots with the pharmaceutical industry. Is it so much cheaper to eat rubbish, but not so much when it comes down to speciality food where you think its healther

Hi Debs, you are so right about so many free from foods and I wonder what they are free from...nutrition for one.

Your not the first person to say that. Bulk cooking is the way forward - if we can find the time

Hi Hidden

Yes, it's very apt with it being the theme of Salt Awareness Week.

It is indeed Zest and its not good reading.

Jerry 😊

I totally agree Jerry in that manufacturers should be made responsible for what they put in so called 'healthy' food.

I agree with Kitten-whiskers below in that we think do we really want to eat it or not and yes the prices are normally expensive.

That's an inordinate amount of salt in a pizza, so glad I make my own food but there are times I would love to be able to have a quick bite without cooking but don't think I'll be doing that any time soon for sure.

Hi Alicia, I miss being able to eat real bread made with whiolemeal flour but I see being a coeliac into wholefoods as a life saver and not a handicap because of poor quality fast food.

Unfortunately the big food manufacturers have jumped on the 'everyone should be vegan' bandwagon by cynically flogging all their usual horrible non-foods with the animal products removed. To retain some semblance of taste, they inevitably end up adding loads of salt, sugar, margarine, and who-knows-what.

No worries, put some pretty eco-friendly pictures on the packaging and the consumer will lap it up regardless. Ka-ching!

Hey Tony you forget that salt makes us thirsty so a 'nice' fruit smoothie or diet coke is also purchased and or with a bar of vegan chocolate...so their cash registers go Ka-ching!

Food manufacturters should treat their customers like they would their families and make food that is healthy and wholesome as that is why we eat, or it used to be.
