I won't be attending the meeting on Saturday, due to prior commitments, so would like to please give my apologies.
I would however like to add a couple of points to be discussed - and hope that someone will please discuss and include them, in my absence:
1) I'd like to suggest that, if there are future meetings, that the Healthy Eating group has a meeting that is separate from the other groups, as I believe that the needs of the groups are potentially different. The logistics of attending a meeting - and therefore needing to 'follow' another group, in order to follow the post - that seems unusually complex, and as I said before - the needs of the groups are different (I realise that's my view/opinion, and others may not agree), but I'd like it to be discussed at the meeting. I see there are 3 groups being represented by a single meeting (i.e. Healthy eating - which is linked to NHS Choices, and then 2 Diabetes based groups - one based in the UK and one is Diabetes India). (Even just writing about that, makes me think it's complicated and confusing...)
2) I would like to say that I think it's brilliant that Hidden has joined Healthy eating group as a Volunteer, and I think he is an excellent addition - with some really great posts and recipes that he has shared. Thank you Jerry!
3) I hope you have a lovely holiday Activity2004 - and I'd like to wish everyone a very Happy Festive Holiday Season.
My apologies again that I'm not able to attend the meeting.
Thank you for letting us know, Zest. Enjoy your weekend and holidays!
Hi Activity2004
I would like to also like to tender my apologies in that I am also unable to attend the meeting due to prior commitments. It is a family day for me when the children and my grandchildren come to see us.
I also resonate with Zest in that it would be much better to have separate meetings rather than 'lump' them together as it can be quite confusing. I think it's brilliant that Jerry is the new volunteer for Healthy Eating as he puts up some excellent posts on the site with lovely recipes.
It’s okay. I understand completely about the children coming over. I babysit during the week and also go to my job. Saturdays are the best day for me to do meetings.
I've just had a look at today's meeting, to see how it went, and I see that the points raised by myself and Alicia weren't mentioned at all. I am very disappointed!!!
I shall just tag Hidden so she knows this too. That there was "No time".
Perhaps that is another reason to have meetings for each community separately - to enable sufficient time to be allocated.
BadHare , Hidden , Hidden and other members of Healthy eating community may also like to know this.
I noticed in your minutes that you asked if there were other issues to discuss, and yet you didn't put in the issues that had been requested by 2 of the members of Healthy eating community - I know we weren't able to attend, due to prior commitments, which is why we both wrote in this post - to request consideration of our points.
There didn’t seem to be any point, or relevance to HE, other than thanking Jerry.
No time seems an excuse for ignoring issues raised in advance, for discussion at the meeting by people in this group. I’d like to add myself as a third complainant along with Zest & Alicia regarding recurrent ill manners & seeming favouritism in repeatedly ignoring this issue within HE.
I have noticed people leaving the group, or failing to follow up posts & replies. It is sad for the group in general, & inappropriate that this continues unchecked.
Sorry to butt in here, I saw Zest' reply and didn't think to bring it up at the meeting and I missed Alicia's so I'm sorry about that folks. And my opinion is if there's a problem then lets sort it out and then its not a problem anymore because I see 3 vibrant members saying they're unhappy.
So I apologise for not bringing this up at the meeting.
Thanks for your reply Jerry - I also appreciate it - and I have to say I was extremely surprised that Activity2004 didn't raise the points herself, as she was chairing and running the meeting, and she is the Administrator of this forum.
But Activity chose not to, and I don't know why that was - although I can see that Activity has said there was 'no time'.
I wonder if maybe a Poll to get the views of all the members of Healthy Eating on how our views and thoughts are represented might be a positive way forward? Maybe HU could help with this? I am going to tag UliHU to request her help in moderating this process, as I do believe there are some unresolved issues that need some resolution.
I shall wait and see what the outcome of that is.
In the meantime, I hope that you have a good weekend, and thank you for responding.
I believe that any member can create a poll so you could do that and you could make a separate post inviting comments from members about their feelings.
I feel bad as I was at the meeting, so feel OK I missed that but lets clear the air once and for all and I'd like to see positive constructive discourse by all parties to resolve these issues as I think that HE is a friendly forum and all members should feel happy to say how they really feel.
So I feel that I let you and Alicia down and now am going to endeavour to put things right...and remember folks you rattled my cage...so I'm on the case...
I would be more than happy to try to construct a Poll - it would take me a bit of time, as I have other commitments, but I could give it some focused thought tomorrow - and if there are any members who would like me to perhaps run the poll by them, before I post it (i.e. might wish to comment on it before it goes out - then please let me know) - as I'd like it to be as constructive and helpful as possible to the needs of the Healthy Eating forum community.
Further to what I wrote above, I realise that I can't do a Poll, as only people with Admin status can set a poll. I have also realised that there are more issues to raise than might be possible in a poll.
I am waiting to hear back from UliHU and I'm going to tag Hidden as well - just so they are aware there's some concerns - they are staff members of Health Unlocked (HU), and good at moderating issues. So thank you in advance for your help, Uli & Laura.
I know I'm not the only one who has concerns, as I have heard from some other members in the Healthy Eating Community too - and as Hidden has rightly said, it's better to be able to air our concerns and have things represented properly. Clearly, trying to get that done in the meeting yesterday was impossible, as the Admin claimed there wasn't any time to raise any points relevant to the Healthy Eating community - except for sorting out the holiday leave and Admin cover.
I have read the meeting minutes that Activity2004 has posted, and I think it was an incredibly long meeting (nearly 2 hours?) and seems to say relatively little of substance? Time delays perhaps, but maybe lack of clarity and structure - I didn't know who was from which community, and which issues were related to which community either... Maybe you had to 'be there' - was it better for those of you who attended???
I noticed that several times, Activity2004 asked people if they had other issues to discuss, but claimed (after the meeting) that there had been 'no time' for the points that 2 of the Healthy eating Community members (myself and Crazyfitness) had wished to be brought up. We had raised this in this thread, with our apologies for not being able to attend ourselves, and anticipated that our points would be raised and discussed. I hope you can therefore appreciate why we felt overlooked and unheard.
I don't think there were many Healthy eating community members present at that meeting? - apart from the Admin (Activity) and Jerry -and I wonder why?
Personally speaking, I am NOT KEEN to attend a meeting that has 3 Healthunlocked communities represented (i.e. The Diabetes UK group, the Diabetes India group, and the Healthy eating group) because I think the needs of each group are different.
Indeed, are meetings even necessary?
Maybe we could have a post in the Pinned posts area where we could have an 'open agenda' just for the Healthy eating community - to then put Suggestions into, regarding what we'd like?
I wasn't going to write a long message, but it seems that I have.
I have also become aware that there seems to be some favouritism going on with regard to people who end up getting banned from our community, and others who appear to be able to post things that have upset some of the community members, and continually seem to be allowed to do so, relatively unchecked. There doesn't seem to be parity or fairness in relation to this.
I know I am not the only one who is feeling concerned at the moment. I hope that these comments are constructive and helpful - I think there are a lot of positive things about the Healthy Eating Community, and I really hope that people enjoy being part of it. Hopefully we can move forward constructively.
One problem is HU sites are not designed for instant messages so a question is asked then we get a notification or we have to have HU open on more than one page and change pages and then scroll down to the reply. So there's a time delay.
We could still have a monthly meeting (update) and Admin post the agenda as a post and then we are not committed to 2 hours but we watch the post and reply so the agenda is covered in 48 hours. And it is much more time efficient for all of us. I replied to 4 points and then said my farewells after 1 1/2 hours and I could have answered those 4 points in minutes but over a longer period.
And we could also do this by private message with only relevant members linked so HE could be discussed by HE involved people only and this would I believe satisfy Zest and would achieve what Admin want and in less time.
i think it would be better if Diabetics had thier own healthy eating group seperate as i got fed up posting only to get told my recipes and what i was eating was bad for me by someone who was a diabetic. I see this a lot on the healthy eating group, diabetics complaining about the people post saying its not good. I feel this is very unhelpful. This does put people of posting and i have been affected by one particular member and it was very upsetting so i dont bother posting much now. grace xoxo
Thanks for sharing how you feel grace111 - and I hope very much that all feedback will be taken into account, and that a constructive way forward will be found, so we can post, reply, and feel supported by one another - and that people are not put off or discouraged.
I hope you'll feel that you can post and reply as you'd like to.
Please persevere and post, Admin told a member last week about this so it is being dealt with.
I've had the same thing happen so fully understand what you feel so thanks for speaking up but please give 'us' another chance we will look out for you and you can have that in writing LOL
its no fun getting private messages from adimistrator as if iv done something worng.when iv done nothing wrong except ask some one to leave me alone and stop advising me what to eat i said im not diabetic but they would not stop and i felt harassed.
Just to say grace111 - that UliHU has got back to me, and she will be helping out with moderation of this issue - and she has reassured me that they are looking at this situation, and will be getting back to us - most likely sometime tomorrow.
I actually left this forum a few months ago for similar reasons to what Grace said. I've joined again because I like seeing people's recipes so I read posts but rarely reply as I don't like arguments
Welcome back Fran182716 - I hope that you'll stick around, and enjoy the community. Hopefully things will be better. UliHU is going to get back to us tomorrow about this.
I agree, things are changing and on the whole we as a community do get on really well.
Now I will tell you how HU groups work, they are run by a group of techies (geeks) and they make a living doing what they do best and thats write programs that collate info anonymously and this info is very interesting and a valuable commodity to health professionals etc. So we have these great forums which ultimately help all of us, so its win win for everyone. Admin do it voluntarily and HU rely on Admin so Admin have responsibility for day to day running keeping spam and unwanted posts off and get the flack when things go wrong.
Now this also means that 'we' as members have a responsibility to respect each others needs and keeping this balance in check is no mean feat for Admin. I'm not Admin I just keep an eye on things and try to support Admin and members.
So members are essential to all HU sites and you will be supported if you receive unwanted criticism by another member. So well done for speaking up and please stay as you're in good company on here.
I have noticed this repeatedly, & also negative & unhelpful comments to people who have joined the forum asking for help, then immediately left after receiving curt, rude, or unhelpful responses
There are people joining the forum for all sorts of reasons, including advice on how to eat to prevent or reduce the effects of diabetes, but this is ONLY ONE health issue, NOT THE ONLY ONE, as it sometimes seems.
We must appreciate that there is no one size fits all with regard to diet, & that most people joining the forum have different goals, & a different knowledge base with regard to what they already know & understand as being healthy. Some people need advice on eating for a specific condition, others for weight loss, some just to feel better, or to help other people by providing advice
Most GPs are still handing out outdated advice, & what we read is often conflicting. However, all evidence points to processed/junk food/white sugar & white flour being bad for everybody, & a clean/unprocessed wholefood diet better for everyone. How people interpret the latter is different for everyone, & different for everyone’s age, lifestyle, health conditions, & preferences.
If someone asks for advice on something in particular, there is rarely a one sided answer, though if people can only see one solution, & give this with consistent bad grace, they may be better saving their advice for a forum on which their views are shared.
I totally agree with what you have said above and also what badHare BadHare has said.
Firstly I have also had concerns about certain people on this forum as well. It's lovely that people want to share their recipes and also people that are trying to eat more healthily and want to get fitter and maybe lose some weight. Some of the comments I've seen on here though are actually getting at people that are trying to improve their overall health i.e. they may use a little sugar in their recipe or eat something that isn't quite as healthy only because they are a little unsure what is the best food to eat. I have to admit that the internet can be like a minefield with all of the information it contains i.e. I can find it very confusing at the best of times. One minute something is healthy the next it's not; just like when low fat was supposed to be good for you but of course we know better now.
This forum should be about sharing tips, ideas, recipes and overall support for each other.
I also feel that when a meeting is called it should be for one specific group, not several as that can become very confusing which is what I found when I went through the meeting notes above.
I have also found Jerry's reply to you very useful and constructive, thank you to Hidden .
Clearly, the issues raised by the community members need to be discussed. There needs to be a transparent communication channel between the community administrators and the community members. You can decide among yourselves which way would work best - as a meeting or a pinned post. Most importantly, a sufficient time is given to address the issues raised by the community members.
We will be closely monitoring the situation on the forum to help it settle down. We appreciate all your efforts to keep a friendly and open atmosphere in the community.
