A walk from Yalding to Sevenoaks

I finally got Day 5 of my 280 mile walk from Dover to Weston-super-Mare up on YouTube. When I started doing this video documentary I had zero idea how to put a video together or how any of the YouTube process works. I can safely say it takes a lot longer than I anticipated but I think I'm slowly getting there, both in my physical journey and my learning journey. I write an accompanying blog for the videos which hopefully add a dimension to them. I've tied everything up in a neat bundle here:

Fun fact - Sevenoaks loast 6 of its 7 oaks in the 1987 hurricane that swept across the south of England. They've since been replaced thankfully.

I've already walked Day 6 which was an exhaustive 22 miles from Sevenoaks to Nutfield. The scenery is much hillier now and the national parks are daisy chained to form vast natural conduits for wildlife. I'm starting to see deer now.

I chose this as my lunchtime spot on my latest walk. A shady spot under a magnificent oak with birds tweeting and buttercups dancing in the light breeze. Walt Disney couldn't have dreamt this place up. What a nice way to spend the day.

Well done on getting your Day 5 walk done, as well as Day 6, and I shall look forward to viewing Day 5 later in the week, when I have a bit more time. Your lunchtime spot looks idyllic and I am glad you enjoyed your walk.

On the subject of food when out walking. I wonder what others take as their fuel of choice? On these walks I've been doing I've been using up some dehydrated meals which are great but I really don't like the packaging they are in since none of it is recyclable. I need to rethink this element of my walking.

That's a good question! I don't really tend to walk far enough to feel that I need to bring any provisions with me, but I must admit that over the Jubilee weekend me and my husband walked further than normal, and were disappointed when a cafe wasn't able to accommodate us for lunch or indeed for a refreshment break, so we ended up thinking that we should have packed something like water and a sandwich.

If I was packing something, I'd probably use a tupperware box (small one) and pack a sandwich and fruit.

Maybe a poll to ask community members what they do, might be an idea. I've never set a poll yet in this community, but will have a think about potential questions, and might try it out. I'll think about it, anyway. Sometimes my thoughts don't always materialise into action though. :-)

Hi again Daiwalker

I've just watched your Day 4 walk from Headcorn to Yalding. About 13 miles, and it looked great. I particularly enjoyed the cloud formations and colours in the sky, plus all the buttercups in the fields. Barley grasses are one of my favourite things, and it was nice when you swept through some barley grasses. The tapping noise from your necklace, and the humour you had about that, was entertaining, but it sounded a bit like a horse plodding along to me, as if you had one alongside you!

I was amazed that you don't take a map with you - and glad that you still manage to get where you want to go. The King George Post box was unexpected, and the goat sanctuary was cool. Knarly oaks, there was a good example of one! I find the telephone boxes and 'book crossings' interesting too - a great idea.

I'll look forward to watching Day 5 over the weekend.
