Why leaves change colour ๐Ÿ

โ€ข2 Replies

Hi everyone,

I do like this time of year as I think itโ€™s really interesting that deciduous trees change to such vibrant colours before they fall.

If we have drier nights the leaves get more sugar and go red but if itโ€™s colder they go yellow.

So hereโ€™s a link from the Woodland Trust on why leaves change colour and why they fall off (abscission) this is really interesting in my opinion as they fall off so neatly and elegantly.

Last year I was driving through the forest and the wind picked up and it was like a snowstorm and the cars were making the leaves turbulent it was surreal and stunning to witness.

Hereโ€™s a link with a great explanation:

I took this photo this morning climbing out of a valley with the sun on the leaves with a hint of whatโ€™s to come. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Hi Hidden

That article about the leaves changing colour is really interesting. The green (cholorophyl), yellow (carotenes) and reds and pinks (anthocyanins), and I'd not realised about the hormone (Auxin), plus the interactions with the weather conditions.

I love the beaty of Autumn and especially love the copper, gold and reddy colours.

Hey thanks Zest I met some one in the forest and she was telling me all about it but this explains it better than I could.

Iโ€™m fascinated as I also love the autumn colours. ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ˜Š
