Wait Time for a Rehab Place

hi all,

it’s been 6 weeks since my dad was assaulted & ended up with a brain injury. He’s doing amazingly considering his injury & where he started he just gets tired quickly and says he feels very week. He’s still in hospital & has been accepted to a rehab facility but they just keep saying he’s top of the list. I know it will depend on areas and a lot of factors but just wondered how long people waited to move from hospital to a rehab facility? & how long they spent there? Just worried about how he’s doing mentally as he’s desperate to get out of hospital. It’s also difficult as he’s in hospital 3 hours from us where the incident happened. Also if anyone had a crainoplasty procedure i’m wondering how long you waited for this? thanks for any replies x

My daughter was in hospital 12 wks after she sustained a severe TBI . Should of moved to rehab earlier but due to " availability " this didn't happen !!! They have to find NHS by 12 wks or you then have the right to choose the facility . We hoped to be able to choose for our daughter as there are more suitable places than what is on offer . 12 wk deadline we moved to an unsuitable rehab which weren't really equipped for her level of care . They say the first 6 mths are the most important for recovery of the brain . Wish we'd known more then and pushed harder for a higher level of rehabilitation . It's 12 wks in rehabilitation.

Hello! I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. I'm not sure where you are but when my husband was in hospital he didn't have to wait too long to get a bed at a special rehabilitation unit but we were told it all depended whether there was a "bed available". Usually with the rehabilitation units, I believe, all patients get their own room which is a massive comfort. It is always a hit or a miss with the NHS and availability but I really hope your dad is able to be moved soon.

Hey, thanks so much for your reply, he’s actually being moved to a rehab today it’s all happened suddenly. I really hope that they’ll be doing a lot more with him there as hospital haven’t done any physio etc. how long was ur husband in rehab for? thanks

That's great news! I'm so glad of that! It will be a world of good out of hospital. My husband was in rehab for 2 weeks but there were a lot of residents who were there far longer, I think ot just depends on the severity of the injuries. But the grest thing is they did daily physio and exercises classes (sometimes twice daily) and they had physiotherapy people to talk to him about his brain injury and do tests to monitor his progress etc. I can't speak for all rehab units but I was allowed in all day and there were no strict times I could arrive and leave. They also gave us some great reading material when he was discharged. I hope this helps!

thank you, we’re really happy he’s really motivated to move forwards so i think it will be good for him. Ah that’s not long at all, i’m not sure how long my dad will need. Personality, speech memory wise he seems okay he just doesn’t have a lot of energy. He’s mobile but gets tired very quick but i think that’s just apart of his injury and hopefully he’ll re gain his strength. how’s ur husband now? xx

Absolutely, it will take time but the strength will come back. It's a massive thing for the body to go through these types of incidents and healing takes time but it will come. I really wish your dad all the very best in his recovery. My husband is getting there thanks, the brain injury is still up and down. He's gone through most of the stages and now it's just a case of time. He had good days and bad days but hopefully the bad days will get less and less as time moves forward 🤞 x
