Fatigue

Hello! I am 24 years of age and 2 months ago had a TBI, I have been a chronic overworker my entire life, balancing 2 jobs etc but now I struggle to even make dinner due to fatigue.

I am a professional working musician and have resumed regular consistent work, but I definitely feel a difference and as a fairly cognitive demanding occupation, I am struggling to keep up with the late hours, long days etc.

This is a classic after-effect of brain injury Chiwa. Can you tell us the nature of your injury ....brain bleed ? concussion ? other ?

Two months might be too soon for returning to demanding work. Depending on the nature and severity of brain injury, the range of outcomes may demand a few steps back and a phased return to normal daily activities, or a complete break from everything other than basic self care.

A return to what we know, and what we do best, is human nature after the 'interruption' of brain injury, but your fatigue suggests you've jumped back in too soon and your struggling brain needs much more time and adjustment to test its parameters.

Owing to its complexities, the brain cannot heal like other organs and needs as long as it needs to readjust

For printouts on coping with brain injury, you can phone the helpline on 0808 800 2244 or email the helpline on :- helpline@headway.org.uk

Best wishes, Cat..

The fatigue is tough especially as it changes. Am learning to recognise symptoms telling me I'm low on energy and plan in breaks to rest.

welcome to the group. I am sorry you had an injury, what was the nature of your trauma and how have you felt in the aftermath? Did you rest completely or try to get straight back to normal?

I admit I tried to go back after 6 weeks but was immediately overwhelmed and sent home again. I think we all are guilty of underestimating how long we need to rest.

Fatigue is the hardest of the long term effects for me to manage. Try to avoid the active/crash completely cycle if you can. Rest whenever you get the opportunity and nap frequently!
