Cheaper broadband, social tariff, follow up.

5 Replies

I've just contacted BT, my broadband provider, via the chat option. I asked about the social tariff. The response was quick. I had to say what benefit I was getting that was on their list which was UC. I was asked for my national insurance number. They somehow confirmed my benefit status. I was offered a new tariff, social tariff, full broadband and landline with a SIM for a mobile. The package comes with a new BT hub (you have to pay for the delivery £9) and alexa home phone device (no idea what this is).

I would like to say this was very easy to go through, takes 10 mins max, no hurdles, no problems, would recommend you change if you are on BT. Not sure how other providers deal with this switch of tariff.

My new bill is now £23 per month down from £36. I will save over £100 in a year. The £10 per month will make a difference in the current economic climate.

You can get a social tariff if you get one of the following benefits;

universal credit

guarantee credit element of pension credit

jobseeker's allowance

income support

employment and support allowance.

But not PIP?

Unfortunately, no. I think it's because PIP is an award that does not depend on basic income. You can be awarded PIP even if you are a millionaire.

That’s great news. Will chance my hand and ask PIP

Let us know how you get on because PIP was not on the social tariff list of criteria. It would be interesting for folk to know one way or the other.
