Hello everyone,

I suffered a BI in 2020 and I thought I managed to recover and put the experience behind me. I was issued a new driving license in September 2021 by DVLA so happy days. I recently was offered a job offer as a driver, picking up school children and dropping them off at school. A medical was necessary and because of my brain injury history they wouldn’t pass me as fit. I explained the DVLA medical team were happy with my recovery in 2021 and issued a new 10 year license. Because this was a council medical requirement the answer I gave them wasn’t enough! The company who offered me the job have stated that I can continue through with the training program go the time being.

Could anyone suggest what I can do please to satisfy the medical team to pass me as fit?

I realise everyone here is continuing with problems and suffering but it seems like I think I’m able to move on and put it behind me, it always reappears and reminds me that it’s not over!

Sorry to rattle on but any advice would be appreciated

Best wishes to you all

Paul

Hi Lottie, although DVLA are satisfied to issue a license, you are responsible for your driving. To drive professionally, the employer carries some responsibility for your driving. To drive privately is seen as different to professional.

I'm not explaining this well. To drive privately, you choose when and how far, as a professional you are expected to drive when and how required. Carrying passengers professionally has a greater liability.

Thanks pairoboots you’ve explained it perfectly and I appreciate your advice.

Hi I went through an assessment to get my licence back. They explained that under DVLA rules you can drive for yourself but to drive commercially/ as a job, I cannot drive for another 5 years. It has something to do with how you are covered by insurance. Hope that helps, check with the DVLA to see what the rules are.

Hi Lottierose,It seems a very strange policy by the company. They won’t employ you but they are happy to train you?! If you are disadvantaged still at the end of this, I would consult Citizens Advice about where you stand with the Equality Act as it does sound like active discrimination.

If you are carrying passengers there are different regulations. I would look on the DVLA site. You will need a PCV licence, I would think, which is what your training will be for.
