My brother is recovering from a brain injury. He’s been in rehab a year.

He is experiencing horrible surreal days where everything feels like a dream.

Have others experienced this? Does it improve?

Does this have a name ?

Hi Ray, what your brother appears to be experiencing is some form of dissociative phenomena when you feel like you are watching as opposed to being part of what is happening. Many people with a brain injury have reported similar. I don't know enough to explain further, hopefully others may be able to help further. Also if you look at the Headway website, or call their helpline they will have information, their contact information is pinned to this page. 🍀

Hi, I had this experience, I would recommend you read 'My Stroke of Insight' by Jill Bolte Taylor. She's a neuroscientist and explains what is happening in easy to understand terms. Many stroke and TBI symptoms are very similar. I found that 'normal' people did not have any idea what I was experiencing at the time. Strangely I did not have a problem with the effects but others around me did because they could not comprehend the nature of it.
