Hi, self pity, is a common effect following a brain injury. Being out classed, it happens to the best of us, one punch, a slip, replaying the events, if I'd..........what if has gone, learn from it, put it away.
If you feel you are having difficulties following the assault, please talk to your consultant, or GP. You may need some support to reconsile your emotions. Ask for a referral to a neuro-psychologist, they will be able to help you, taking into account the brain injury. They may refer you to a neuro-psychiatrist, no, you are not mad, don't get wound up with the job title, they just have knowledge with regards to brain injuries.
If you get a referral to a generic mental health service, push for a neuro referral. Generic services often miss the effects of brain injury.
Also consider contacting the Headway helpline, contact details are pinned to this page. They can help with information and support. Also talk to friends and family, make sure that they know that you are having some problems.
Don't go down the line of 'man up', everyone needs help at one time or another. It's big to ask, and any who does, deserves a medal.
I have experienced similar to you, a bit of an occupational hazard, although had my brain hiccup for different reasons, I have been there, the replays, the what ifs, I'm xyz.
Best wishes 🍀
Welcome Eatconcrete. Your username & post gives me a pang in the gut - reminds me of when my son was set upon by a gang of thugs, knocked to the ground and repeatedly kicked in the head. I really feel for you, especially having visible reminders of the attack and, it seems, a brain injury.
I'm assuming you needed medical attention, but were you given a brain scan at the time or seen by a neurologist ? A brain injury can result in long-term issues such as poor mobility, memory or emotional difficulties, problems with word recall and inability to cope with excess stimulus (noise/crowds/bright lights etc).
These life changing after-effects need careful management to get us through the early months/years ; the main issue being acceptance. If we don't accept (and adapt to) our changes we can lose ourselves in anger or depression. Most of us here have learned to manage our difficulties (with time). Life is different but still good. Please stay around and talk. Talking can help, big-time.
So what are your main problems, and what help/tests have you had since the injuries ? Cat x
