How effective is seizure medication

Hi, it depends on the type of seizures, frequency, severity, and a lot of other factors, the seizure medications I have taken, tegretol, keppra and now Lamotrigine have all been very good for me at controlling my seizures although sometimes you may need more than one medication to take with another, in my case, tegretol wasn't quite stopping my seizures completely, I'd get several break through seizures each year and it wasn't until I took keppra that it all stopped, but on the whole they do work. You have to watch several things, some have side affects, you shouldn't drink alcohol and you may need to take other meds to stop any side affects but that is the same with most drugs.

I'm taking leveteracitim aka keppra since 2014 and haven't had any seizures since.But the reason for my seizures has diminished too.

As mentioned, alcohol is somewhat contraindicated as it lowers the seizure threshold, but my consultant suggested that it was OK to have one glass of wine or pint.

Yea I’ve been taking lamatrogine for a while now and it keeps me from having seizures I’d say almost complete control and I do drink a little bit alcohol its pretty good at preventing seizures

I was only having mini seizures and put on lamotrigine. It didn’t stop them really and I then went on to have a full seizure and was put on keppra as well then 6 years later had multiple seizures ending in status. Phenytoin was then added and so far all’s well. Having said all that, I do have an AVM in the head which is what causes my problems. No seizures since 2016, anniversary on 28th.

Dear salamander160,it is effective, once you stabilize on the meds recommended. Right after violent seizures you may be taking a dozen meds, morning, noon, and night. And there has to be a stabilizing period for your body and mind. I dont know whats normal, but I still had a few seizures, smaller after leaving a 4 day hospitalization, I hope this is not the case for you,

Benzo-diazapines are very effective at suppressing the activity in your brain that causes seizures. Just be sure to read those 10 sheets of paper printed out with your prescription! I cant say whats right for you, medically, but being educated on what you put in your body, and brain is sooooo important. Much Love, jh

Also I will not be able to stop taking Phenobarbital, 200 mg/day.

I know medication going to be suggested as we have been prepped on Anti-Epilepsy meds, basically his fatigue so bad now, it's causes symptoms of epilepsy and we're on week 5 trying practical measures to ease fatigue best we can been hit and miss he has behaviour difficulties so worried on what medication be promoted
