Spatial neglect improvement

Hello :)

This is my first post on this (or any) forum but wondered if anyone could share their experience of neglect with me? My mother has been in hospital for three and a half months post aneurysm rupture and is suffering from visual and spatial neglect. She is currently unable to sit unaided and drs are reporting that without an improvement in the neglect they suspect she never will. Cognitively she is doing well, able to converse quite easily although her emotions are definitely dampened from how she would normally be.

Thank you!

Hi, ask the doctor for referral to a neuro-physiotherapist and also a neuro-optometrist. Treatment for visio-spacial issues with BI is a bit of a lottery in the NHS. You could try going private. I have read some people on here that get neuro-physio treatment via the NHS but none having optometry. The Maudsley hospital have a visual disturbance unit, it comes under psychiatry. Private optometry search for John Glover.

For more knowledge try 'The minds eye' institute, it's in the US and also search for Dr William Padula again US. There is a video on youtube where he gives a lecture to a Canadian medical audience.

Good luck

Thank you so much. She has seen a neuro-physiotherapist who has said currently he doesn't think therapy will help. Saw an optometrist a few weeks ago at our request but not sure if neuro specialist. Will follow up those recommendations thank you

Hi, I went to John Glover to help with my visual problems. It was a real help.

This sort of assistance should routinely be offered on the NHS, but my problems were classed as “within normal parameters” so basically I was OK. Unfortunately I wasn’t and the issues badly affected my balance.

John Glover helped enormously.

Yes his name keeps cropping up, seems he's the number one guy in the UK. I saw Janet Green in Wigan, a bit eccentric but knows her stuff and will tell you she has no BI experience.

Hi Pink vision, i see Janet Glover quite regularly, last time earlier this year.

She enabled me to lift my head and look around, so helping me immensely with balance and walking.

I am currently trying audio therapy through her to try and improve the way my brain processes sound.

I only need to contact her when i feel i need to see her now.

I find her amazing.

Thanks Janet, these kinds of therapies are so underrated in the UK. It seems to me that if sensory overload is one of the prime factors of fatigue, memory and concentration issues that it should be addressed very early in BI treatment. Have you come across building up automatic neural functions as a way of reducing fatigue and lowering the need for concentration?

No cant say i have.

To be honest im 67 now and wondering what is due to my age and what BI. Im almost 8 years post BI and didn't start addressing my problems outside of the NHS til around 4+ years.

However Acupuncture and Tai Chi also helped and i have reflexology once a month and massages as often as i can afford.

I have trouble exercising but i can walk and swim so have to make do with those.

I find it less than helpful when i read of people training for marathons and long bike rides, if only!!!

I do push myself though, not bad for someone originally thought of being in PVS if i should survive at all.
