I have receptive aphasia, I can't understand what the characters in movies and tv shows say, and I can't understand what I read, I feel very lonely living with this condition, does any of you struggle with language just like me?
Does any of you have aphasia?: I have receptive... - Headway
Does any of you have aphasia?
My own struggle feels so minor in the context of your own struggle.
My aphasia has improved in the 3+ years since my injury, but was much different in its effect. I struggled to find words when speaking, which I still do, but not as severely as in the beginning.
I still don't read well. I'm fine with short bursts, a paragraph or two, and I can scan pages to search for what parts I should read, but I still can't just sit and read - this was a huge impact for someone who was a lifetime avid reader. I finally donated my collection of books because the were no good to me any more.
I did find that audio books work for me, and my audio book collection is growing...they have been a blessing for me. I can pause, rewind, and rewind again if needed. Mostly, I can enjoy a story almost as if I were reading it myself, and this has made a tremendous difference for my quality of life.
Many audio books offer captioning, but I do better without having to try to read.
I wonder if audio books would be helpful for you, not just to be able to enjoy a story, but to help develop new neural pathways for processing speech... I'm not a neurologist, so I can't say for sure, but either way you might find something that adds to your quality of life as it did for me.
I wish you healing and happiness in each of your days.
Hi there, I also have aphasia since after a brain injury I had back in 2015. It's so hard to find new friends with it isnt it. Headway has helped a bit but finding people without a brain injury can be challenging
