Coping with a serious injury

Hello there! On the 14th Jan 2019 I simply fell down the 12 stairs at home. This caused a massive traumatic brain injury, broke the base and whole right hand of my skull, a subarachnoid haemorrhage and three blood clots. My two children were told a number of times that I would die. My family were then told to find a care home to cope with the extensive disabilities I would have. Since gaining consciousness I have managed to become exactly the way I used to be. My only problems are coping with what happened to me and the guilt I have because my children found me. I want to offer advice or support to any family or individual that needs it.

That’s really good news , my husband made an amazing recovery also after I was told to expect the worst. How are your children coping ?

Thank you so much for your message. My children are coping really well. My daughter is 10 and my son is 14. They keep repeating how they didn’t believe I would ever be their Mum again. I think as I have returned to the Mum I was before my accident they have found the strength to move forward. I am so glad your husband has defied medical expectations. I wish you both joy and peace for the future.

Take care

Vikki

It's so lovely to read stories like yours and gives me the strength to keep on telling my hospital patients to keep concentrating on getting better and not to listen too much to what the doctors say. They may have the medical indications, but they don't know your bodies and minds personally to know that you can achieve miracles.

And you clearly have Vikki, so well done to you. Your children would be immensely proud of you for having recovered, please don't feel bad for them having found you. Children are tough creatures and the most important thing is that you have recovered and are the mum they love and know (even more than before no doubt!).

Well done for wanting to help others, that's so kind of you and thank you again for helping me. That's us nurses for you, always wanting to help someone or something eh :)

Time to hop off to my next shift, hope that you have a really lovely weekend and let's hope the smile shine comes back soon.

Big hugs and keep shining,

Maria xx
