BCC replied quite quickly to my inquiry:

It may be possible for you to apply for ‘new style’ ESA – this is a benefit for those who have made sufficient national insurance contributions but who are now unable to work due to sickness. This is £73.10 a week (if you are over 25.)

When you say your SSP is due to be halved – what is it due to become? SSP is a set amount of £94.25 per week – anything less than that would not be SSP. Anything on top of that would be contractual sick pay in addition to your SSP.

In addition to SSP or ESA, you may also be eligible for universal credit. This is a means-tested benefit which can include housing costs (up to the LHA rate for private tenants) and an amount for each person in the household.

If your mental health conditions are having an effect on your ability to carry out daily tasks (such as cooking, personal care, mixing with people, going out, etc) you may also want to consider a claim for personal independence payment.

We could do a most in-depth benefit check (if you want to know amounts) if you provided more information. For example, you age, how many people are in your household (partner/children/etc) and what income/other benefits you have.

While UC can take 5 weeks to give you the first payment, it is also possible to get an advance on your first payment (although this is then repayable and deducted from ongoing payments) which might help you in the meantime.

UC is paid directly to you – including the housing costs component – so your landlord isn’t paid by UC and, if you have a copy of the tenancy agreement, there should be no reason for UC to contact your landlord – in fact, a colleague has advised me that you can even ask UC (via the journal) to not disclose that you get UC to your landlord.

If you are served a section 21 notice, it would be best to contact a specialist housing advice agency such as Shelter.
