Job interview

I have a job interview tomorrow, it's for a temporary post where I already work. I haven't had an interview since my accident. I'm trying to prepare for it and have got so worked up, I don't think I can make myself go.

I really don't know what to do. It seems so trivial compared to most of the posts, but it's making me feel sick.

Hi Sue, it's not trivial at all. But, believe in yourself, you can do this. Try it to overthink this, write down some answers to imaginary questions. Make a list of those attributes you have that make you ideal for the job, and don't panic.

If a question throws you at first, take a deep breath to calm you and if you don't understand or are unsure of what they mean, then ask for clarification.

You won't lose anything by attending but you will gain a lot, if you are not successful it will have even fantastic experience.

Please do it and let us know how it was.

Thanks for your reply. I've just got back from walking the dogs to try to calm myself down. I am trying to write examples down, but so scared I'll not be able to think straight when I get in there, though I will take some notes in to prompt me. I suppose if it gets too bad I can just apologise and leave. I really didn't expect to find it this difficult.

Sue, I Always take notes in with me....pre b I and since. (Doesn't everyone??) Perfectly normal to do so in my opinion ☺

This time tomorrow it will be done, and whether successful or not it's good practice.

Good luck

Thanks, I'm struggling to concentrate to make any decent notes to take in with me and somehow just managed to have an argument with my husband about it, when all I wanted was a bit of encouragement. How on earth does an interview get round to 'have you considered HRT?'

I'll let you know if I manage to make myself go.

Sue,

You don't need many notes..just a few ideas/ buzzwords to help you.

I usually have a copy of my cv, a copy of the job description I'm applying for with a few words to help me say why I would be good. And usually have ready four plus points and one negative to admit to (we are all human...I'm not ever so tidy. Try to treat it as a practice run...nothing to lose then... do try to go ...I'm sure it will be a good learning experience. ☺

Notes are so important, I haven't had a job interview since I was 15, 47 now but was always nervous and take notes now every day as my short term memory isn't that good...

hey sue firstly wear something you feel comfortable in, have an early night, so youve got all those questions and fears going around until you eventually drop off.

have breakfast , get to the interview in plenty of time but not too much so your thinking.

pick up a mag flick through it.

when you get called in listen to the question, if you dont understand or didnt hear the question dont be afraid to ask them to repeat it.

give your answers slowly, theyll understand your nervous

good luck

Dear Sue,

Hiring managers value people who are motivated and sincere. You clearly have both of these traits! Don't worry about saying things just right. If you get nervous, just go ahead and mention that. The interviewer will often be sympathetic and will respond to that human connection -- after all, we have all been nervous before.

Be kind to yourself. No recriminations, just gentle compassion and understanding if something feels challenging at the time.

Thanks, I'm still nervous, but feel calmer than yesterday. Just getting ready. I'll post how it went later.

Hi Sue

For someone who is stressed about an interview, i am not sure writing down possible questions would not be helpful as stress can interfere with memory. I always used to look at it strategically - what kind of company it is, the nature of the job and skills needed... Also, the kind of person they might wish to employ - you of course!!! Nurture your self esteem and confidence and the rest should follow.

This advice is probably too late. Hope you got your job.

I think it went ok thanks. I managed to be much calmer today. I took my notes, I didn't really use them, but I suppose they were a bit of a comfort blanket. I also asked to have a printed copy of the interview questions for when I lost my train of thought. I am glad I went through with it now, though whatever the outcome it will be a while before I put myself through that again. I now have to wait 2 weeks to find out the outcome, as another candidate is on holiday. At least I've done my bit though. I'm off work now until Tuesday, phew.

Thanks everyone foryour advice and encouragement.
