Hi, I have coeliacs, my son doesn't but he has recently developed alopecia. I know that coeliacs can be hereditary and that alopecia can be caused by an auto immune disorder.

I just wondered if it was worth chasing up a possible connection?

Thank you for your reply.

I've spent a fortune on things like Nioxin and the supplement Hebridean Sea Kelp (For low thyroid) and his bald patch is getting bigger.. :(..

I will make another Dr appointment for him..

I would get it checked. My friends son, who is coeliacs, has problems with his alopecia too.

My sister has an actual allergy to wheat and she has alopecia too. She eats gluten free.

Hi weee, it was my hair starting to fall out in greater and greater quantities that really made me look into my health (I have DH, only diagnosed last May but I've been gf for about 16 months now). I didn't feel that just going gf was helping with the hair loss so I started taking vitamin supplements, and now I'm also taking glucosamine and chondroitin with MSM. I feel now that after a month or so it seems to be making a bit of difference. I'm not saying this is what will help your son, just putting it out there for information! I do hope you get some help from the doctor with your son, good luck!

Hi Weee. It could be anything unfortunately, however, I have alopecia areata too but I have non-coeliac gluten sensitivity. My doctor ran loads of blood tests to see if there was any obvious cause and the only thing that was off was my Vitamin D results. It's very very common in coeliacs and pretty much 50% of the UK population have a deficiency. I've been on high doses of D3 for a few weeks and my patch is growing back!

I hope this is of some help.

Thank you for all your very helpful replies. I think another GP appointment for sure and maybe he can be more helpful than saying 'grow the rest of your hair longer to cover it'

If it is an auto immune issue or something that can be treated it would be good to know.. :)
