My niece lives in Spain and her daughter who is 8 has been having symptoms of Coeliac disease. Just wondering do they have support for sufferers out there..
Hi, Just wondering has anyone had exp... - Gluten Free Guerr...
Hi, Just wondering has anyone had experience of diagnosis in Spain.
Apparently Spanish supermarkets are some of the best in Europe for gluten free products. My Mum has a place over there and my daughter has just been diagnosed with coeliac so I've been looking into it!
There seems to be a good level of understanding of coeliac disease in Spain. Different areas have their own organisations.
Hi Dinger, Spain is pretty good for coeliacs. Mercadona supermarket has lots of their own brand foods and these are clearly labelled gluten free. They don't have a specific gluten free area though . I would take the travel cards with you but they have lots of good fresh fruit and veg. Mercadona supermarket chain started to label their own brands clearly when a family member was diagnosed with coeliac. You can get bread(which isn't so good so I would take my own ),pasta, cereal ,sweets ,chocolate and everything else you need from there. Eating out is pretty much like here, some places are really helpful and some aren't !
Hi thank you all for the info, will pass it on to my niece. Maybe will also send her a link for this website. Thanks again
My family live in Spain. Ever since the mention that I was Coeliac the paediatrician has been over-zealous and is monitoring the children. So perhaps that's all that's needed.
Coeliac disease is more common in Spain than the UK and in my experience is taken much more seriously.
I've also found Mercadona good - especially for a small supermarket (and brilliant for lactose-free items that I can't get here). In the large cities places like Hipercor stock Dove Farm and all the usual Scharr brands that we have here, plus more.
Hi Jacks, Thank you for your helpful info. Will pass this on to my niece.
