Hi Milind, I guess it depends how you define insomnia. When I get glutened what usually happens is that I do fall asleep but then within 3 hours or less I wake up and I'm WIDE AWAKE. Very very frustrating. And then I toss and turn for another 3 hours or so and eventually fall asleep through exhaustion, only for it to be time to get up. Before I was diagnosed this happened almost all the time and was leaving me constantly tired...

Absolutely...this is precisely how I suffered Lexy. For 5 years. Went through all kinds of treatment including psychiatric drugs. I was very very low in mood. And accidently I came across an article which informed me that gluten can cause insomnia and I moved to gluten free diet and now I am fast recovering. I am so happy that finally I have found whose symptms of being glutened exactly match that of mine. By the way, did u also felt bloated?I did.

Thanks, Milind Murugkar

I have problems getting to sleep, staying alseep, or waking up through out the night, but, I have never linked it with Coeliac disease. I have become very aware of what I eat, I also hate to spend half the night on the toilet, because I have eaten something I should not have had

Oh...but are you sure it is not linked with gluten? In my case it was indeed because of gluten. I could sleep only for three hours or less..then used to e awake for most of the night. But this was before I found its linkage with being glutened. All the best for you Mazz.

Yep I suffer from insomnia but I don't know if this is because of gluten or just me. However, when I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia one of the effects was insomnia. I read about the effect on the brain and relevant hormones that influence sleep associated with fibromyalgia. Although it was difficult getting comfy with fibromyalgia and I often woke up hurting. I am sure that someone on this forum will have better knowledge and be able to explain this better than me. Since being gluten free the fibromyalgia has disappeared but still I have problems sleeping - bit like you and feel too tired to read and too awake to sleep. It is difficult for me to identify the cause of my insomnia and I wonder if I have just got into the habit of waking up. But maybe there are biomedical reasons for this. The dietician I saw the other day told me that there is a strong link between the brain and the gut. I look forward to hearing any explanations from others.

Me, I get this. I went on a gluten challenge recently, and I started to get this strange awakening and sleepness nights like you describe.

In fact, I think I have worked out why... it is connected with the immune system response. Your body produces extra cortisol to damp down the inflammation going on in the gut, and for some reason, I think the inflammation in the gut is worse at night.

I didn't get this before the gluten-free diet, but now that I have been off gluten for a while and my immune system has isn't in a chronic state of constant alert, it reacts more normally to antigens when they come along.

I was diagnosed with IBS but before I even went to the doctors I cut out the gluten as my tummy got worse when I discovered home baking (I LOVE making bread) and my Mum has CD so it seemed logical at the time and did help for a while.....

Within a month of cutting it, I noticed I woke up properly in the mornings. Cutting out gluten didn't 'fix' everything else BUT I have not looked back - my quality of sleep is so different GF.

For what it's worth, my Mum says that even as a child I was up all night and asleep all day, in her opinion (and I'm pretty inclined to agree) that it just exhausts my body trying to digest gluten.

I ate a normal pizza a few weeks ago to test things out a bit, I woke up late the next day feeling hungover, so I think there's definitely something in there :)

sure Sonianin. There is surely something there. This confirms my guess. thanks.

Since being on a gluten free diet I regularly go to the toilet at 6.00 am. Problem is I wake up at 7 am.:)
