Ingredients to look out for in lip balm and moisturisers

Does anyone know what wheat and gluten containing ingredients you need to look out for in toiletries? I need to check my lip balm but don't know what I'm looking for since the ingredients are listed via their scientific/Latin names.

The Latin for wheat is 'triticum'. I have never seen it on a food or make up label. The scientific or Latin names you are seeing may well be man made chemicals. Which brands are you looking at?

Hi JellyB,

I have recently been through the whole process and carried out a lot of online research to find those pesky 'hidden gluten' ingredients.

The following list is the result of my labours and excludes more obvious ingredients (ie those with wheat, barley, rye or oats in the name), as I figured I didin't need any help in identifying those. By contrast, however, it includes some which may or may not be wheat-based, such as tocopherol and vegetable protein. My policy with this is if in doubt, to err on the side of caution, so I've listed anything that might be suspect!

In any case, to be 100 per cent sure that a product is gluten free, I would always suggest contacting the manufacturer, as labelling is not always clear - or even intelligible.

Anyway, here's my list, which I have been carrying around with me over the past few weeks for frequent consultation. Apologies for any spelling mistakes (I mean, just look at some of those words!). I hope it helps...

Maltrodextrin, hydrolysed vegetable protein - unless wheat is quoted as it must be by law and yeast extract are all gluten free.

Thank you so much. I've had a really sore throat recently and couldn't figure out how I'd been eating gluten. Turns out there's wheat in my lip balm.
