Another disappointment , I was shopping in Morrisons today and i really fancied some sweet pickled onions. I was just opening the jar when i read contains gluton. Didnt think they would have gluton in . I have never bought them for years .

Thats something else i will have to find .I am dying for some now !

Could be the vinegar perhaps. Brown Vinegar from malt definately contains gluten.

Do you have a Waitrose near you? as they sell pickled onions that are gf. I had always thought that swet pickled onions in spirit vinegar were gf but I checked Tesco's and all the ones that they sell in spirit vinegar have malt extract added. In cluding their silverskin ones.

Waitrose sweet pickled onions in spirit vinegar also contain malt extract, but their silverskin ones do not and they also sell a spiced pickled onion that does not have malt extract in it.

(You can also check their other pickled onions using this link)

Why manufacturers have to do this is beyond me! And is one of my biggest gripes against food manufacturers. So good luck in your quest.

Jerry

Thanks i will have to check them all in future .

Hi Jacksnanna - they are very easy to make, and you can use cider or other safe vinegar. I recommend wearing swimming goggles if chopping lots of onions..stops you crying.

Hi Jacksnana, Haywards Silverskin onions are made with spirit vinegar and the allergy advice says: contains Sulphites. I have just bought a large 454g jar from the Co-op.

Barry Norman, hot & Spicy pickled onions are gluten free - the following is a comment from the manufacturer - "the supplier of the malt vinegar that we use in the Barry Norman pickle onions are stating the vinegar is Gluten free, I have explained that we have a customer who suffers from coeliac disease and it is very important that the information we give is correct, they have sent a copy of the coeliac codex standard which explains the legality of what is declarable on a spec/label " the onions themselves are excellent

Thanks i will try them !
