Hi Jacqui, never heard of a cream for DH, but maybe there is one? I've only been prescribed Dapsone tablets (1 a day for 1st week, then 2 a day until I go back to the consultant - will have been 5 weeks in total by then). The tablets certainly seem to stop the itch. They don't stop the stomach problems if you are accidentally glutened, and they don't stop the blisters either as I still get both if I get cross-contaminated or get unintentionally glutened... Actually I think I may be better off without the Dapsone because I used to get the itching within minutes of gluten exposure, whereas now I don't get it and so I carry on eating something unaware that it doesn't suit me!! Let me know if you hear about a cream though as I'm interested!! Cheers, Lexy

thankyou lexy for your response to my question. i have recently just had 3 biopsys taken from my body my chest, leg and stomach the doctor said to me he deffo thinks its DH. I have suffered for over 20 years with a really sore itchy red burning rash all over my body. When it is at its worse its like having very bad blistering sunburn especially between my chest and under my chest preventing me from wearing a bra! i have been under serveral doctors over the years and none have been able to diagnose my problem until now. i am back the hospital on tuesday for my results hopefully i get a answear to this awrful condition!! i have been on a GF diet for the past month and it seems to be calming down alot. i did notice over the years when i have had beer/larger my rash got unbearable, thinking back now it makes alot of sense!! if i do have DH i will mention daspone to my doctor thankyou regards, jacqui!!

I was given eumovate cream, helped the itch for a few days then it came back worse than ever. I now use betnovate cream, again it helps but has not clearned up the patches and flare ups. Need to go back to the dr as i keep getting fare ups but have no idea why as I do not eat wheat / gluten. Good luck!

I will give my two pence worth here --it has no medical base, it is up to you ---I use Bio-oil (get it on-line as there are some really good prices there--do NOT get it from the high street unless you are rich ;)--- the oil keeps the blister skin soft so it stays intact longer allowing the new skin underneath to develop and become strong and also feeds goodies into the new skin developing underneath the "bubbles" -even when the blisters burst I still use it as the skin recovers.... I was highly un-scientific and used Bio on one patch and a bog standard E45 on another and the Bio bit recovered a lot quicker after the bubble broke,--the purple ugly "scarring " disappears totally for me.

Hi

I personally found the eumovate cream better than the betnovate and dermovate creams that I had been prescribed by my GP's for years before I found out I had this condition.

I am very strict with my diet but still get the odd flare up and I find that one or two 10 mg dapsone tablets ( one a day) is all I need to keep it in check, it saves me itching on a night and i dont think the tablets will do to much damage if they are only taken in this dosage.

With regards to getting the rash even though you are really careful with your diet, this was puzzling me so I started keeping a food diary, I then got coloured stickers - each colour represented a different symptom ie green for DH, pink for stomach ache, etc. to stick in days of the diary that i had those different symptoms.

Last week I had a DH flare up, i had made gravy with a organic Kallo stock cube and also had Bovril, both are supposed to be gluten free, everything else I ate that day was plain food, meat and veg. When I looked back in my diary at the days i had previously developed the rash on two occasions I had cooked with a Kallo Stock cube.

Once my rash has settled down I am going to have Bovril again just to make sure that I am correct about the stock cube, it all takes time but it is worth keeping a diary, as you tend to forget what you have eaten and when and its easy to think it is one food causing the issue when its another food.

Hope this is helpful to anyone who like me is really strict with their diet yet still has symptoms.

hi thakyou for your response it seems dapsone is the one for DH i will certainly mention this to my doctor on tuesday when i get my results from this awrful condition i have suffered from for over 20years!!! i will aslo ask what cream is best for DH,regards jacqui

Hi, Dapsone is the main remedy...I don't use that I use a steroid to help but the best thing you can do is take a very close look at your diet. especially at cross contamination and at stuff you've always eaten because unless you stay very aware then some products get changed or made somewhere else etc. A totally GF diet will rid you of DH and nothing else is anywhere near as good.

Hi - DH finally under control here, but it has taken a long time and only with extreme stress. Despite a strict GF diet I still had flareups but nothing like the original ones. I did some research and found that halides exacerbate DH, so I did a bit more diet tweaking. Sea fish is a culprit and funnily enough a nice salmon steak brought a rash the following day. There are other things like ibuprofen that set me off too. Three years on and I can now eat fish without problems. I don't take ibuprofen now (although once I used to live on it) as the headaches stopped with gf diet!

I have gone through a range of topical steroid creams and most alleviated some symptoms depending upon their severity, but food control has been the main thing. (Couldn't take Dapsone - blood count too low.)
