Hi Suecee, here's a link about how maltodextrin is made and what it is used for:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malto...

Coeliac who can tolerate codex wheat tend to be OK with wheat deriv's but if you are sensitive to them, then it's a good idea to avoid artificial sugars (poly-ols) which are used a lot in diet cola's, drinks. Dextrose is another sweetener that can be derived from wheat and is often used to coat French fries.

The EFSA did tests with coeliac using maltodextrin and dextrose from wheat with 30ppm gluten and some had issues with it.

In the Eu wheat deriv's do not have to be listed as such whereas in the US, Oz and NZ it does.

I have to point out that maltodextrin made from wheat is considered safe for coeliac in the UK and many coeliac have no issues with it. It's just the very sensitive who have a reaction to the traces of gluten in it.

Sorry, but not all Malto-dextrin is derived from wheat.

It can be from beet or potatoes.

Depends on producer of the g/f goods.

Need to ask individual companies...

Hi Apricot because Maltodextrin can be a wheat derivative and contain traces of gluten wouldn't it be easier for food manufacturers to label their source.

Hale and Hearty label their crisps as containing maltodextrin from tapioca so why don't all food manufacturers.

To me it's bad enough having to read food labels without having to contact the manufacturer to ascertain the source. Also because of the FSA labelling laws a food manufacturer can change the source of the derivatives without the expense of changing the label. So my attitude is if a manufacturer can not be bothered to reveal the source of maltodextrin then I can not be bothered to buy it even if it says gluten free on the label.

We had a member of GFG who had a petition to parliament about labelling wheat deriv's as exactly that and CUK would not support it because they class maltodextrin as safe for coeliac regardless of it's source so there could be foods in their food list for coeliac that contain maltodextrin made from wheat and have traces of gluten that will make the sensitive coeliac ill but are below codex.

And I'd like it if we had more robust standards in the UK with more informative food labelling. Because of this I am not a member of CUK and am not interested in their food list, when I am a UK diagnosed coeliac. Me being a coeliac is not a life style choice nor is my sensitivity to gluten.

So being a great believer in ''us'' the consumer having as much info as possible about our food, I would very much like to see the grain source of these deriv's and additives listed like they do in the US, Australia and NZ. As life beyond codex is a minefield sadly.

Ps I like your cat, looks like a pampered pet to me.
