Ready cooked chicken usually contains dextrose which can cause problems in some coeliacs.

If it was already sliced chicken besides added wheat sugars the slices are often separated with flour!

I think that they inject stuff into the chickens before cooking - I could be wrong but even some fresh chickens do say that they're ready basted, etc.

Hi Barny, I remember when I was first diagnosed with cd, I asked the staff at my local Asda if the hot cooked chicken was safe to eat, and I was told it wasn't, something to do with the coating. I have bought cold cooked chicken from the Co-op and Tescos that I have ben ok, and usually avoid the hot, cooked chicken. Did you put any spread or butter on your sandwich, could that have been contaminated with breadcrumbs?

I can buy chicken leg/breast from Co-op and it suits me or the whole chicken but not extra tasty as that has coating on it my mate works behind the dele so I know it's right. All I can have from Tesco is whole chicken as the portions have coating.

ty fif it does help and there is a coap near me thanks a lot xxx

In addition to wheat sugar used to flavour the skin, ready cooked meat also sometimes contains wheat protein, i.e. gluten, throughout. The wheat protein is injected before cooking, so that when the meat is cooked it does not shrink, but retains the moisture. This means they can sell you moist meat, weighing more than it would if they had just cooked it normally.

I think this only applies in some varieties of sliced ham or pre-cooked chicken slices or portions, usually the cheaper ones (at least they seem cheaper, in fact you are paying for added water...).

If there is any gluten added this way, it will be on the label, so you can avoid it by reading the label.
