Running and getting "caught short "

Three times recently while out running I've had to jump behind a bush as my gut had chosen that moment to explode. Not only is this horrible, I feel it's probably time to consult my GP. Had anyone else had a similar experience?

Hi moggie

Sorry to hear about your eventful run. Rather ironic you should get the runs on a run.

Oh! Half my reply is missing. Having technical problems today sorry. Are you on a gf diet?

I used to get it quite a lot, i run a bit, and became known for it, i had to plan in my runs a toilet stop at various places. Now i'm non gluten, i don't seem to struggle quite as much....

Were the three episodes around the same time? I would talk to your GP about this. Perhaps he will advise you to have a test, just to check all is well. Best wishes.

I used to have this problem. I could be doing anything and all of a sudden would have to rush to the toilet, and I do mean rush.

Went to Doctor who sent me for blood test to check for Coeliac, and was all confirmed. Since I've been totally g/f have never had a similar problem.

My advice would be to see your Dr and ask for a blood test.

Good luck

Running? What is that? I am not able to walk more than a few yards! I have found that the Gluten Free bread causes me to be taken short and boy do I have to hurry!

Thankfully those days are over now I'm GF. However, having got diagnosed with high blood pressure and having to take tablets for that I find I need to pee very urgently sometimes especialy approaching a hotel in the car, or arriving at an airport. So if you see a car on the hard shoulder of a motorway anywhere it could be me. The law should bechanged so that a 'I must P anywhere sticker can beplaced in car windows!

Thanks for the comments all. I am a diagnosed coeliac and follow a GF diet carefully. The running diarrhoea episodes are similar to the crazy dashes before diagnosis! Next stop the docs I think!

Let us know how you get on. It's possible you are very sensitive and eating something with small amounts of gluten eg maltodextrin, glucose syrup, dextrose. Or you may have had a tummy bug.

Good luck with the GP.

I just found this thread.. and I have to add that after 6 years of TOTAL GF and lactose avoidance- I still have this issue. My way round it is to not eat ANYTHING until I've completed all my outside tasks for the day and can safely be within feet of my own facilities for the remainder of the day. Its not ideal- but then, pooping in a bush in minus 3 isnt either. As an avid hiker, I spend at least a couple hours walking per day and find that I have to tailor my routes to include open public conveniences (not many of them about nowadays and especially out of season!) or places I know I can duck into in an emergency. I have to walk alone cos it would just be TOO embarrassing to include anyone else in my dilemmas..

I cant work out what causes this- almost everything i eat now seems to make my belly sound like a full orchestral tune-up. I have a feeling its the reputedly 'acceptable' levels of gluten the government have deemed is ok to class as GF. I cant cut out any more foods from my diet; Im down to 8 stone already. Ive seen a dietician; they were less than helpful as I didnt have the magical bit of paper.

I just work around my unpredictable explosive digestion but if anyone has any answers or suggestions...? I'm listening.

Just a thought Moggie.. Lactose..????

These 'explosive' episodes happen to me if I eat chicken…exactly as portrayed here, so stock, fat or flesh are out…forever. Can't tolerate hens eggs or the feathers. Other fowl and eggs, no problem.

Do see your doctor. The issues you mention are also strongly indicative of crohns and ulcerative colitis.
