Poppadums

Hubby has been eating poppadums since being diagnosed with CD, no problems. Today he munched his way through four and was Glutened. There is a warning to say they may contain gluten which we have never seen. Just thought I would post a warning as they are made from gram flour which should be ok.

It can depend on the brand - Tesco, co-op, pataks don't have any warnings, but sharwoods, M&S and some others do.

Which brand?

Not uncommon for production processes to change, new products come on line on same production line that contain gluten, and change of manufacturing facility to one that does have gluten present.

That's a shame he got glutened. Coeliac is a disease of ever-vigilance unfortunately.

Hm, I usually have Pataks as it says "Gluten Free" on the packaging. Although I don't usually have more than say 3 at a time... Can't say I notice any immediate effect. Do you remember which brand of poppadoms it was? I tend not to have them if I'm eating out as I get SO TIRED of asking about the ingredients in every thing I want to eat! ;)

The poppadums were Sharwoods, on the bottom right of the packet there is a warning, I am normally so careful when shopping but have never seen this before, the birds have benefitted from the ones we have left.

The basic ingredients are irrelevant when it comes to cross contamination. At times it seems that food producers take perfectly gluten free ingredients and puposefully add gluten in just for the heck of it. Even when there is no 'may contain' warning, I would still tread with a lot of caution.

I do not buy ready cooked poppadoms. I always buy the 'cook yourself' ones from a Turkish shop in London Road, Liverpool which are imported from India. They are easy to cook, just drop them into a pan of hot fat for about 10 seconds and then leave them to drain. I generally find that indian food is mostly gluten free as they rarely use flour in their cooking. But European brands of Indian foods do, so I steer well clear of brands such as Sharwoods. There is an Indian shop in Bold Street, Liverpool which sells a really good range of Indian pastes and pickles, rice noodles and all sorts of GF delicacies.

Thank you. I am buying Pataks now, I usually cook my own but sometimes can’t be fussed. I live on the south coast and do not have the choices of shops that you have. We are reliant on food deliveries from either Sainsbury’s or Waitrose, have a good day.

I actually live in a village near Chester and it's an hours bus ride into Liverpool, never take the car as it's a nightmare to park, and really expensive. But I know what you mean, we are in isolation as my wife has Chronic Myloid Leukeamia and I have heart failure after catching a 'mystery' virus in Spain last Christmas! You are a bit luckier than us as our delivery choices are ASDA, that's it. I am from Hampshire originally.

Sorry to hear of your situation, we started shielding 12 March and apart from visits to doctors and local chemist we haven’t been anywhere. Initially Asda and Iceland were the only ones to give us delivery slots, a bit annoying as we shopped with Waitrose on line for many years. Anyway we now have the choice between stores. Only been to Chester once, my son had to work there for six months as part of his PhD, very nice area. Have a good weekend.
