Struggling!!

Hi I’m Chris, disabled, 63, married with three grown up sons. I’m only about a stone overweight but being very inactive am really struggling with losing it. I’ve been told I am prediabetic and need to cut down on sugar, and chocolate which I’m addicted to!! Been doing it a week and so far not lost an ounce ☹️!

Hi Chris,

I have no formal medical training whatsoever (however due to my own complex health issues please don’t think me completely clueless!). Plus I also worked in the health sector for over a decade, supporting people with a range of health needs.

It sounds to me like you have an insulin resistance problem going on at a cellular level, which will have been the cause of the pre-diabetic diagnosis.

It will also be the cause of you being a stone overweight - probably through no fault of your own. It’s your body doing it’s best to cope with it all - and isn’t an overeating issue.

I suggest you consider researching and following a ketogenic diet. It’s a diet very low in carbohydrate, has medium protein, and is high in fat. If you decide that it might be for you, then please DO discuss it with your doctor before actually starting a diet of this type.

The Keto diet requires a significant change in mindset and lifestyle to be effective (like giving up pasta, bread and potatoes as well as chocolate); but could ultimately give you many more years of much better health. There is growing research that this diet is effective for a list of medical issues, including type 2 diabetes. I know about it because I follow a very similar diet (the Paleo-Keto diet) that means I live in a state of ketosis on a day-to-day basis. Living this way has improved my health significantly. The plus side of the Keto diet is that I can have pretty much as many fry ups a week as I like - delicious 🙂!

I’ve not read them myself, however I understand that you may find that Dr Richard K. Bernstein’s books to be of interest (available on Amazon). He has written one that caught my attention recently called the diabetes solution.

Hope this helps.

R.B.

Thank you so much, I have a liver disease (autoimmune) for which I have to take steroids long term, apparently these alone can trigger off diabetes. I’ve heard of the ketone diet before, sounds like it’s something I need to read up about. Thank you so much for pointing me jn right direction 😁

Hi,

This might also help you:

And perhaps reassure your GP a little...

Btw, next time you see a doctor, if you are still eating gluten just check that you have had a coeliac blood test done in the past. Occasionally Coeliac Disease can be the cause of serious liver problems.

If you have an autoimmune liver disease, I would generally suggest reading into the autoimmune protocol (AIP) diet, which helps reduce inflammation and the autoimmune attack within the body.

My aunt had a liver transplant following autoimmune liver disease, and I couldn't suggest such a huge dietary overhaul in good conscience, without suggesting someone monitors you while you follow it. It would be worth you investigating qualified nutritionists in your area (check out the BANT website to find someone who operates near you).

I have tried the autoimmune protocol for thyroid issues, and see many who have tried it for arthritis and Crohn's disease. I haven't seen many who have tried it with liver disease though, so also have to suggest you find others with your condition who've tried it. It's changed lives for many who have tried it though.

I hope your condition isn't too advanced, it is a pretty awful type of autoimmune disease!

Hi Chris, I am prediabetic and very slim. I have heard at times it is not about how much you weigh, it is about how the body processes things, sometimes it does not work as well as it used to.
