IV IRON INFUSIONS safe for celiacs😊
Hi Rmichelle, I'm curios why you are so anaemic when you've been diagnosed for a year.
When I was diagnosed with coeliac I was very anaemic and was prescribed 500mg iron tablets and told to take 2 four times per day. It was horrendous as they acted like an enema, so I didn't take them and ate a natural gf diet and my iron levels returned to normal within a couple of months.
My experience is tiny amounts of gluten can make us anaemic but not appear to upset our stomachs so to me there's far more to having coeliac than an upset gut. In my opinion and experience we in the UK have far too many foods that have allowed levels of gluten in them so I advocate a zero gluten diet and it works for me.
I know a coeliac who thinks that IV infusions are fantastic which makes them feel better for months. So if you explain to the consultant that you do not want anything malt based regardless of it's gluten free status then it could work for you but then I would look at keeping you iron levels good with diet if that's possible.
So good luck with this and I for one am interested in how this pans out for you.
Jerry.
Thanks jerry, for a year now ive been iron deficient, i started out by eating a iron rich diet containing lots of liver, spinach, eggs etc and regular 6 weeks iron bloods tests, nothing happened!! I went on taking prescriptive iron tablets and liquids from gp which irritated my hiatus hernia and left me doubled up in pain, so i tried a over counter floravital iron whixh is a very mild gluconate liquid which is kinder for me, (i double the dose) in 8 months my irons have not rose they are still the same, my consultant says that being celiac 40% of people will have iron defiencey, i also have hashimotos and graves disease and a lady of 48 with fibroids and heavy periods, my rbc is lowering too, im trying to keep where i am at the moment with floravital.
Gp's have not taken it seriously enough and i should have had these infusions before as i cannot tolerate tablets-so with the combination of not being able to take tablets and my medical history im left poorly.
I wish i could have made it up with my diet which is 100%gluten free but it has done nothing for me-i still eat liver twice a week as i do like it.
I was diagnosed with celiac 2 years ago but only found out i was iron defiecent one year ago due my hyperthyroidism.
At least im getting the help i desperatly need now and have been referred to haem also now.
Thanks jerry for the malt advice, i believe dextran is suitable for celiacs.
I asked about iron supplements on VFL and the popular natural iron is Spatone and what is important is taking Vitamin C to help with the absorption of iron.

Thanks jerry i do take vit c too for absorption😊 thankyou for your help though.
Forget about what's in the infusion they'll sort it (I presume you're thinking ferric carboxymaltose?). Yes, I've had them but they're not the answer if you have anaemia of chronic disease. The anaemia will return. It's only a sticking plaster if you don't sort out the problem. I'd definitely say your priority probably needs to be on Graves treatment to control your autoimmune system. By all means tackle iron levels but don't get hooked on a symptom. They are low as a result of Graves causing hyperthyroidism. OTC Florovital etc won't increase your iron levels sufficiently. The manufacturers say its not intended to replace treatment. The most potent oral iron is Ferrous fumerate. A 210mg tablet gives about 65mg of available iron (speaking simplistically). Several tablets make up a daily treatment dose to treat deficiency. They're hard on the gut but there are ways of tolerating and not spoiling their effectiveness. Because you have Graves you also have to watch what iron rich foods you eat - some you mention you are eating, although healthy for others, may exacerbate hyperthyroidism so making you more anaemic.
Thanks jack i undertsand its a sort of a sticking plaster but ive been like this for a year now effecting my life alongside other medical issues, ive tried most tablets including fumerate on prescription but because of a hiatul hernia most iron tablets really caused alot of pain and vomiting, i have also tried the liquid too. I will investigate on why ive a iron problem but what with bei g a woman of that age menstrating very heavy with fibroids it could be that aswell like the consultant says and like you said graves too.
Lol😆 i started using floravital as a last resort as i could not use gps , it has stopped me from going lower down but thats with a double dose.
For now i will be happy with just the sticking plaster even if its temporary...alot like the tablets really ,like you said we have to find out the route of the cause?😊 thankyou.
