I've had coeliac disease for nearly a year and was still having symptoms, i heard make-up contains gluten so stopped wearing it and my symptoms have stopped. Now i need to start again and need help. I heard no7 from boots and the body shop make-up do not contain gluten but not 100% sure. Can anyone help please.

Hi Alandra

some Body Shop and some Boots make up is ok, but you need to check every single item/sub-range. If you ask the staff they will fetch their file/show you the ingredients (last time I used Boots they had the ingredient list in a little pull out file with the make up). It is tedious but the only way to be sure. I found my migraines stopped when I stopped using shampoo with gluten in.

Alandra some MAC lipsticks are also GF. I had to bin all my nice Clinique gloss squeezes when diagnosed. Wow the money we spend on make-up and then we did to bin some of it! Burt's bees also do a lot of naturally GF lip balms as are the Nivea coloured tins you'll find in most chemists or boots. Personally I tend not to be so worried about foundation as most medical advice online says that gluten in make up cannot pass into the skin. Yet anything that can get absorbed via the mouth like lip stick or shampoo maybe a problem.

There are also some specialist GF brands like Afterglow online.

I use Bobbi Brown (fine with their face range) and Liz Earle cleanser, toner and moisturiser. MAC lipsticks (they too have a book/ ingredient list - American brands are very hot on this) and am fine with those. A lot of hair products give me Psoriasis on my scalp. So Polytar shampoo has been a staple in my bathroom since being a kid and even after going GF has remained. Albeit it is much better than it used to be.

I've long used Liz Earle products (QVC online do great deals). They use a lot of natural ingredients and you can avoid the ones with gluten or oats. The men's range is also lovely - try the men's shower gel. Great smell and doesn't contain all the chemical nasties that other brands do.

Bare Escentuals make up is also nice. The foundation powder, blushers and mineral eye shadows are good.

This place is great especially if you want to replace your high end make up for half the price. Great for those MAC looking glimmer eye shadows:

In the USA this looks interesting they actually market GF as a selling point redapplelipstick.com/lip-gl...

This blog also looked at GF lip balms a few years ago

Hi Alandra, I use Green People products. They do a small range of make-up. They don't use chemicals like sodium lauryl sulphate etc in their shampoo, shower wash and do fragrance-free products for people with sensitive skin. greenpeople.co.uk/organic-l...
