Link between Coeliac and Osteoarthritis

Just wondering if there is any more info about a link between coeliac disease and osteoarthritis?

I was diagnosed with Coeliac a couple of years ago and i'm nearly 40. It's taken ages for symptoms to settle down but i'm getting there!

I'm being sent for an MRI this week because I have mild scoliosis and my back surgeon did some reflex tests which were positive. When I googled what they were it came up with osteoarthritis (and some awful other things too which I don't think I have). I have a really stiff back in the morning and restrictive breathing. My surgeon said my scoliosis is too mild to produce symptoms like that and then he did the reflex tests. Is osteoarthritis an autoimmune disease too? I can't seem to find much about it on line.

Thanks to anyone who can give me more info about it.

I have had coeliac disease for 30 years, about 10 years ago I was diagnosed with arthritis in my lower back, then 5 years ago I was told I have copd and arthritis in my neck and shoulders. All this has caused problems with walking and lifting things so I was medically retired from my job in July.I know rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease but not sure about osteoarthritis.Looks like you have similar problems to me,ps I'm only 57 but sometimes feel 87.Hope you get sorted soon.

Hi BronB

Searching on the PubMed site will give you information about osteoarthritis. Modern research suggests that it is an Autoimmune disorder and may be best controlled by a whole food, plant based diet (limited animal products).

Coeliac disease can often lead to nutritional deficiencies which may be linked to osteoarthritis. Make sure you are getting a good amount of vitamins C and D.

My major symptom before going gluten free was painful joints. Hope you can find some relief from your symptoms.

Yes BronB, osteoarthritis definitely has an autoimmune component. Gluten sensitivity was enough to cause me a lot of pain even just getting out of bed. I am improving a lot after one year of being almost gluten free. I am wondering now if anybody knows of an association of gluten sensitivity and tinnitus?
