Hi Worried 111

I have always had problems with perfumes and a variety of additives in everyday products. It seems fairly common for people to have problems with a variety of other things / foods when they are coeliac.

It may be helpful to avoid products that contain things like sodium lauryl sulphate and parabens. I use Green People products (face cream, bath products) but there are other products on the market. Using natural cleaning products is no bad thing, but perhaps you could try Ecover if you feel you need more cleaning power.

Hopefully your reactions may improve over time.

My dry and itchy skin got worse and more sensitive after I started the GF diet and was diagnosed (by skin biopsy) as dermatitis herpetiformis. I eventually got it under control with steroid ointment and it eased off over time, as did my sensitivity level.

I became crazily allergic to all manner of foods when I went GF so that I seemed to be reacting to everything. Eventually somebody told me about Buteyko breathing technique which, apart from curing or easing asthma in many people, damps down the immune system in the case of auto-immune illnesses as the body is better oxygenated and so it functions better. This helped me phenomenally. I saw a health programme on TV about Wim Hof whose breathing method, similar to Buteyko, also claims to help reduce auto-immune illness symptoms.

Worth a try! You can find self-help explanations, no need to spend a fortune. There are qualified Buteyko practitioners in the English NHS but they treat asthma.

Hey Hil101 I was replying to Worried111 and see that you mentioned becoming allergic to many foods at some point. Have you been tested for Histamine Intolerance? All foods have histamine and if you have intolerance you can go through waves where you have allergic reactions to many foods.

It's often caused by a deficiency in DAO enzyme (Diamine Oxidase), take a look at this food list and try to remember if you were eating a lot of this type of food when you went Gluten-Free histaminintoleranz.ch/downl...

I'm histamine intolerant and that's actually what causes my gluten intolerance, since yeasty things are higher in histamine.

I considered this at the time and it didn't seem to be histamines that were doing it, just massive over-sensitivity to many foods which varied in histamine content. I believe that for many people, chronic low-level hyperventilation is caused by the illness and is not easy for health professionals to spot. I found the Buteyko technique really hard at first because of this. Nowadays, if I become ill, the first thing I check is how I am breathing. It often needs correcting.

Have you been tested for histamine intolerance? Vinegar is high in histamine.

Take a look at this food list and see if maybe you've been eating foods high in histamine lately: histaminintoleranz.ch/downl...

Hi .

I use Simple products, soap, bath creme, talc etc. Strangely, though, not their roll-on antiperspirant as I can detect an odour from a chemical in it -though unperfumed.

Surcare washing up liquid, detergents, fabric conditioner. Also Stardrops to clean bath & wash basin etc.

Many cosmetics contain Formaldehyde releasers, you can get a patch test to find a positive or negative reaction to formaldehyde. There are two types of allergic reaction, 1 is IgE mediated response where blood pressure may drop and an epipen is required. 2 is non-IgE allergic reaction where blood pressure is raised. Allergic reaction is an emergency situation and requires A + E with treatment. If you have problems with inhaling these items that cause problems get your lungs checked out for Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis.
