Hi Georgia

Yes, it is very likely that you will get ill if you start eating foods containing gluten. You may not feel ill but damage may be done to your insides.

Perhaps have a look at Coeliac Uk for general advise and information about coeliac disease.

I should think if your coeliac and you've not eaten it your whole life you will be very sensitive and feel very unwell when you start eating it. That said many people don't have severe reactions and many of the known symptoms are not gastroenterological. If you introduce it your symptoms may not be immediate or obvious but because you are coeliac you will be causing damage to internal organs etc. So in my opinion it's just not worth trying!

Yes, you will.

How quickly will depend on how your body copes. You could be violently ill within hours or you could be the type of person who has no gut reaction and damage is done elsewhere.

I absolutely understand if you are curious about what gluten foods are like, but I promise you that they just aren't worth it.

Do you really want to become anaemic and fatigued/very tired all the time? Or in the long term develop brittle bones (osteoporosis) or put yourself at higher risk of cancer; maybe you fancy having depression or brain fog instead (i.e. extremely unhappy all the time and unable to think straight)? Maybe you would like mouth ulcers etc? There are dozens of known potential issues.

It took decades for me to be diagnosed and I am still living with some of the above consequences to this day - because no one knew as much about diagnosing Coeliac Disease when I was a kid.

The fact that you have posted the question shows that you care - very well done for doing this. Keep on caring for yourself and stay away from the gluten diet.

Do your best to accept that you are different - you have special needs when it comes to food and that's ok. Surround yourself with people who can accept you for who you are; and don't be afraid to ask for counselling from the NHS, your work or elsewhere if you're struggling to accept who YOU are.

Take care and best wishes,

R.B.

I agree with everything that has been said. I was diagnosed late in life after feeling generally yucky for years. So if you can stick with GF it would be better for you :)

Agree absolutely but my suggestion is that most are allergic coeliac because of all the damage pesticides etc that are in the wheat, my suggestion is to try sprouted wheat (Ezekiel bread) sprout and grow own wheat.

Friends if mine are doing this and now I shall.be trying it myself in next few weeks.

Visit a good Nutritionist and get an analysis done as well.

Not sure on cost it will depend where you live mine here is only 30€ visit and is very thorough.

She has helped so many and continues to do so.

I'd just say that there is no evidence to suggest that coeliac disease is caused by pesticides. (For my part, I don't understand why we would get ill from pesticides on wheat but not pesticides on other grains, fruit and vegetables.

Sprouted wheat, as I understand it, still contains gluten so I would avoid it like the plague.

Obviously, it's up to everyone to make their own decision.

I'm sorry - I must disagree. Ezekiel bread is NOT gluten free and therefore NOT suitable for any Coeliac to consume safely.

Unfortunately too many people often confuse healthy eating and being on a gluten free diet.

A Coeliac has an autoimmune reaction to all types of wheat, barley and rye gluten, whether it has been organically grown or not.

I hope this helps.

Ezekiel bread does contain wheat, however if you are like my friends who grow their own wheat and even though do have coeliac they have had NO side effects from their own sprouted wheat. I have not said everyone should do this, however when I do know of people who grow their own and have no side effects from "sprouted wheat" then as I said I certainly shall try it myself, and who knows?

Sadly Wheat is so badly damaged along with barley rye oats.

I shall personally try it, some people as my friends (yes diagnosed coeliac) they are up to present having no issues, I was just saying some people may try it for themselves.

As someone who was an undiagnosed coeliac for many years because I was asymptomatic for the classic Coeliac gut symptoms, I still strongly think the idea lacks any merit.

I also don't think that it's the most sensible advice for the young person/teenager(?) whose thread this is.

However it's your body and something you seem keen to try. I just hope that you are able to get regular TtG blood test monitoring from your Nutritionist during your trial. If your TtG levels stay within the 'normal' range, then maybe you would consider getting together on a new thread to discuss your findings?

My husband was diagnosed just over 10 years ago. He was a "silent celiac" until we found out and eliminated it; he now gets reactions when he gets "glutened accidentally" (not that often anymore, thank goodness. He was recently diagnosed with diverticulitis; pouches had formed in his colon bacteria got in them and he had to go to the emergency room. I am the same age as him, we have been married for 34 years (eating the same things). I had a colonoscopy/endoscopy and I do not have the pouches. I truly believe that he got the pouches because he was eating gluten/wheat for 40+ years and didn't know that he was allergic. So I would advise to not see how you will react. Truly, there are so many other healthy food choices out there, wheat/gluten do nothing for us!
