Why is it if I go out for pizza, I get a half sized pizza IF they do gluten free. It's so annoying when everybody else's comes out twice the size of mine.
I love my food and for me it's one of the most annoying things about coeliac disease, it drives me insane!!!

I also love my food and have always had a large appetite and know exactly what you mean, look at our bread though that is tiny in comparison to a normal loaf and I have recently bought some almond slices from Sainsbury's and they are also very small, yet we pay so much more for it.
Some places I have been to when i have eaten out have compensated if they have removed something containing gluten from my meal, ie given me more salad or veg than normal if they have taken away the bread roll for example, I had this at a Handmade burger restaurant a few years ago and was really impressed as a got an extra large salad and a huge bowl of coleslaw, but when i went again i had a different manager serve me and the extra portion he gave me in replace of the bun was tiny, it was coleslaw in a tiny glass dish that you use to put jam in when on an all inclusive holiday, I did complain and say i had been provided with a much better portion before and although he did get me another portion I did feel a bit put out and hungry when i left and never returned. Other places simply remove the gluten ingredient and give you less!
I tend to eat out at fish and chip shops now who specialise in GF and the portions are the same as normal ones
I agree with everything said. It's really bizarre!
I have it happening with other foods I can't eat too - if I ask for the item to be left off then I NEVER (this obviously really annoys me haha) get anything extra in return yet pay same price. E.g. I can't have coleslaw, so if I ask for none of that, do I get extra salad or kettle chips... You can bet not!
Hi Mabes Just to address the balance after not eating there for a few years we decided to give handmade burger a go yesterday - what a difference a few years makes, it was really good.
I was presented with a huge GF menu with lots of choice and we can now have a special bun which is individually wrapped and sealed to avoid cross contamination, the chips are now totally GF and they even have soya milk milkshakes for anyone who cannot tolerate dairy. Excellent service, we will be going again
So one of the worst examples of this I found was co-op chocolate brownies. I can't remember the price but I'm sure they were more than normal. They had normal sized packaging, but when you got inside there were 4 brownies about 3cm by 3cm each. It was completely laughable.
Oh yes I know the ones. Also the mini bakewells you get in places like Costa. I know you get 2, but they looks so pitiful compared to gluten filled items like tiffin/muffins/giant teacakes etc.
Also while I appreciate that M&S cafes do GF items now, the fact the afternoon tea type options in some cafes are all 'bars' disappoints me. Although they are quite yummy, they are all hardish options... (Brownie is soft I guess) and long and thin! It would be nice if they did some other shaped something. Like why can't they individually package mince pies or Christmas cake (we know they make it as they sell it in the food hall!).
The kicker, to me, is that not only are the portion sizes smaller, they're also often more expensive than the regular sized ones. I read an article recently that some restaurants do it because they think everyone on gluten free is just doing a fad diet so they should be willing to pay a higher price. It's awfully unfair for the rest of us.
And the other thing is - WHY do coffee shops so often think that all we want is a chocolate brownie?
"Is anything gluten free?"
"Yes! We have a chocolate brownie!"
They could try removing all the food they offer for the rest and only selling chocolate brownies to them too. Then maybe the penny would drop.
