Gluten free chewing gum.

I have developed a dry mouth. I'm due to see the doctor in a couple of weeks and will run the symptoms past him (dry mouth, eyes and an annoying cough). In the mean time I could do with a respite from the dry mouth. Can anyone recommend a chewing gum that is gluten free? I've looked online and have come away confused!!

Hi Sallydogsmum, apparently the chewing gums to avoid are the man made ones and this one is made with natural ingredients and has been recommended on here before:

And good luck at your Dr's,

Jerry

Thanks Jerry, I'll try and get to a H&B. Can't say I really like chewing gum, but at least this one looks okay!

Again, thanks.

Thanks! Not heard of them. I'll grab some next time I pass a Waitrose.

Trident are ok as well.

Thanks. I didn't realise there would be so much choice, the internet seemed to offer only bad news about gum.

It sounds like you might have Sjogrens Syndrome, an autoimmune condition. You might want to do some research into it and see if it sounds like a possibility to you and suggest it to your dr. It's common for people with Coeliac to also have an autoimmune condition. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis, Sjogrens Syndrom and definitely a gluten sensitivity, if not Coeliac (my dad has Coeliac but I wasn't tested 'til after I started meds for the RA which would give a false negative, so not sure if it's a sensitivity or CD, but do know I feel better without gluten). Good luck!

Hi Karen.

I too think I may have Sjogrens. I'm due to see the rheumatologist in a couple of weeks, I will discuss it with him. I've had RA for 30 years and been through every drug going. About 10 years ago i was put onto Enbrel injections, which have been wonderful, but they seem to have brought a mixture of issues with them. I developed the CD/gluten sensitivity about 3 years ago, and this problem possibly for a year or so, but until last week it wasn't too problematic. Now it is! I don't know what's worse, the itchy eyes, the dry mouth, the annoying cough or the dreadful tiredness and weak muscles (which could be Vit D3 deficiency, the RA, the CD or coincidence).

Thanks for your reply, take care.

Your dry mouth could indicate Sjorjens. Avoid using an alcohol-based mouthwash.

Your throat could indicate Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Disease - worth checking if this is you:

Hi Jacks (love your picture btw)

I have many of the symptoms described, it's all very similar to Sjogren's isn't it? I never thought about acid reflux. i have a friend with it and he complains about some of the symptoms, particularly the cough and the mucus.

Luckily I don't smoke or drink so it won't be hard to cut those out, but why does everything involve cutting out more things from a (fairly limited) diet???

I'm seeing the doctor next week, so I'll try and get to the bottom of this.

Thanks for your thoughts.
