i.e. are you now keen to embrace eating naturally GF foods veg, fruit, pulses etc? Are you now proactive about any symptoms of illness you have to ensure you get diagnosis early?

Hi Fiona

Yes, I now eat naturally gf food. Initially I did try gf bread but found that my body couldn't cope with yeast. I tried full fat probiotic yoghurt to help with healing and found that my nails stopped splitting. I have ended up on a lowish carb/full fat diet which is working well for me. I do use gram and buckwheat flour but never buy any ready made gf products.

I'm very fortunate that all my recent follow up tests have come out with good results and my health is the best it has ever been. The only associated autoimmune problem I have had from time to time, is an eye problem called iritis, which I get treatment for asap.

I don't think it has made me view my health differently with regard to diet as I have always been conscious of the need to eat well and control my weight and never really ate much carbohydrate. Like Penel I don't eat the GF stuff as I have intolerance to some of the ingredients. Since diagnosis I have felt so much better particularly as the fibromyalgia disappeared as did the other symptoms. I now feel so relieved that I have an explanation for the problems I was having and I think that has had a psychological benefit. I swim nearly every day and have managed to get my speed up and have so much more energy. In fact - touch wood I don't need to visit the doctor very much at all nowadays.

I'm not a diagnosed coeliac but going GF definitely made me more aware of healthier eating – having to read the backs of the packets really brought home how much rubbish is in most supermarket food. These I try and eat a paleo-ish diet and will pay extra to prioritise quality, and generally try to buy things that are as unprocessed as possible – I used to eat biscuits by the packet and now virtually never eat the GF equivalents. I think I'd never really been ill before and I don't think it had occurred to me that food could make such a difference!

I am aware of the long term implications of not sticking to a gluten free diet. This upsets me more than the very nasty immediate symptoms of eating gluten..

Lik e you, since being diagnosed cd I stick to a full gf diet. Its only been about a year, but i still find it hard on times not to be able to eat as I used to. I now do a lot of baking of cakes pies etc, and they taste ok. My family has tried them, and they say they can't taste the difference, so I must be doing something right!!!!!!!!!!
