I was diagnosed a few weeks ago so am very new to this. So far,I've found that with regard to availability of gluten free products, out of the main supermarkets, Sainsburys is by far the best. Tesco are poor and Morrisons a complete waste of time. I've tried home made bread with variable results.
To anyone interested,I would recommend Aldi's Harvest Morn frosted flakes. These are very good value at 99p for a 500g box and are marked ''suitable for Coeliacs''. I would also recommend 'Prewetts' gluten and wheat free cookies range from larger Sainsburys superstores, very nice and 2 boxes for £2 at the moment.
I look forward to looking through the archive.

Hi Alanproj, And welcome to the group, it strikes me that you have embraced the diet well so good for you and if you have any queries then please just ask.
Soon it will be second nature and instead of seeing what you can not eat you will be able to focus on what you can eat.
Now Prewetts they make some great gf biscuits I really like the double chocolate ones.
Good luck and do let us know how you get on. We all have our ups n' downs!
hi alanproj, i totally agree with you on the supermarket front, sainsburys is by far the best for GF foods, which is good for me otherwise i have to travel at least 15miles for another supermarket. My favourite is their frozen lasagne yum. Mind have to say Asda have always had a good range of frozen. i love the prewatts double chocolate ones too, my waistline doesnt!!! I agree with Jerry you have knuckled down to it very well. I still havent managed a decent homemade bread
so have decided to stick to warbutons, just have to lay off the butter now. You will find lots of interesting questions and blogs. They have helped me quite a lot. so welcome from me too.
Welcome Alanproj - you can write a blog on here, ask a question view the tag directory and rate your hospital. Have a look around. Hope you find it useful. We tend to focus on health/ diet topics vs baking etc on this site. However you can also find us on facebook & twitter (@gfguerrillas) and on our Tumblr Blog (Gluten Free Guerrillas) where we cover a range of topics as well.
Thanks for the heads up Alanproj. My first choice for breakfast cereal is oats but I might look out for the Aldi cornflakes. Useful when in a hurry.
As Jerry said we have ups and downs, and the Guerrillas are a good bunch to turn to to air frustrations. For some of us its been (and still is for a few) a rough ride.
There are other Coeliac sites but this is best one for serious(ish) health/diet topics rather than sharing recipes as Fiona said.
I think a lot of us might go through similar stages after diagnosis, such as...
Elation - "Hey, there's nothing seriously wrong with me after all!
Realization- No good wholemeal bread or real ale ever again.
Discovery - There are a lot of alternatives. This isn't so bad.
Disappointment - The alternatives are tasteless and expensive
Frustration -
Why can't I get what I want on prescription?
Why don't airports have gluten free food?
Why on earth did they have to put wheat flour in that product?
Satisfaction - I am a Coeliac, and I am coping with it.
Aldi is great for gluten free, they also have some fishcakes in their freezer section that are gf. Waitrose is really good too if you live near one. There are a lot of foods on the non gf sections as long as you always read the ingredients, though if you have bought something before, always check ingredients again, because sometimes they change them. If you haven't already, you should e-mail Gf suppliers like glutafin and DS, genius etc, some of them send free samples when you are new to the diet. M & S do gf products, breaded fish, breaded chicken, gf sausages, burgers stuffing, etc and a lovely cherry chocolate cake and lemon cake. They have the gf symbol on the front. It can seem daunting at first, especially watching out for cross contamination, but you sound really positive. I bought a book on Amazon called Gluten free for Dummies and that was really useful. Have you been referred to a dietician yet?
Hi there, yes Aldi is good, they do some nice marzipan chocolate too. I like the sound of the M&S cakes.. I'm quite fond of Kalo rice cakes(sea salt and cracked black pepper). I think the way I'm going that I'll end up with a lot more tasty and varied diet than I had before.
Hi Alanproj if you can eat rice cakes (they still all taste like foam to me) then you'll love sakata crackers - v low fat and tasty. They're Aussie and they ppm of gluten are extremely low. They have that crispy crunch that is so often missing from GF food. Try finding them in waitrose - in the normal aisles. They are on twitter & facebook too: facebook.com/sakatacrackers
Hi there, I am also new to all this malarkey...And I have to agree Sainsburys is very good as is Waitrose..Also M&S have a very good range( they were a godsend at xmas as all there sausage/bacon wraps and stuffing were ALL gluten free)... Although theirs is sometimes harder to find as not on a special section but dotted around the store, and the cherry/choclate cake mentioned in an earlier reply is to DIE for!!
On the bread front Warbutons is by far the best and DS have some Ciabatta rolls that are really delicious even for non GF folk. Great for lunches etc..I tend to concentrate on what I can eat rather than what I can't and there are alternatives to almost eveything, I guess I find hardest of all is when out and about and am hungry as I can no longer pop into M&S for a quick sandwich!!..so I try and carry a GF cereal bar with me...Once I have built up a good list of GF places to eat the better it will be...I understand Zizzi have GF alternatives and some Starbucks..also M&S cafe do GF sandwiches. Good luck in your new quest and if you find any really good tips share with us all please. x
Hi there. Thanks for the info. On a sausage front Co-op do a 91% beef sausage, which,if I've read the label properly does not contain gluten. Tastes v nice too..
Carluccios is good too. I noticed the other day that of you look on the Sainsury's gluten free foods list-they do warn us not to buy from the deli counter, fresh fish, or butchery, due to them being next to the bakery & there being a risk of aerial contamination! New to me-why didn't I think of that? But top marks to Sainsbury's for the thought!
I,m feeling 'glutened' today & thinking about why! The only thing I've had that I didn't check out, was a pack of three Aldi Harvest Morn chocolate coated rice cakes. Does anybody have any info please? I've looked at the A ldi site, but have found no allergy info on it. Any help please?
