How many of you discovered you had a hiatus hernia when you had your endoscopy for Coeliac Disease?

Did you ever get heartburn or acid reflux before diagnosis? If yes, did that clear up since going gluten free?

I had an endoscopy in 1992 which found the Hiatus Hernia but no CD, 2007 confirmed Hiatus Hernia and CD, 2011 again confirms Hiatus Hernia and reduced folds d2 (CD)

I had my biopsy in November last year and was told i had Hiatus Hernia, never had any idea before then.

I had my endoscopy around September 2009. It revealed a small haitus hernia. I used to get acid reflux. I was convinced that I would choke to death in my sleep.

Since being diagnosed I have not had another attack of acid reflux, and I don't take the medication for it that my gp prescribed.

Maybe most people have a haitus hernia but only us coeliacs have had them filmed!

Snap we have lots of these in the GFG team. Hard to know which came first the hernia or the CD?! Although as you say Phil - it's probably pretty common and we're just the lucky ones where it's spotted.

The problem for some Coeliacs can be that if you're given iron supplements to help deal with nutritional deficiencies this can set off the heartburn again (as can rich foods, spices, wine, coffee etc). On the whole though I think most Coeliacs are the same in that once GF the acid incidents reduce hugely.

I remember merrily popping Gaviscon at work and just thinking I'd eaten too much at lunch!

Me too, I have a hiatus hernia and they also found Helicobacter Pylori at the same time. Makes you wonder like Phil says. They would never have found either if I wasn't being tested for Coeliac disease!

Me, I have a slight one apparently! Found during my endoscopy back in 2002. Oh what joy, another little thing to concern me when I first found out. It also needs to be pointed out that I was told by a nurse and the doctor performing the endoscopy, that most people have a little bit of a hiatus hernia, due to our eating habits. Also as coeliac disease is a genetic disposition, you always get the CD first, then the hernia. We are all born with CD, not with the hernia.
