So, had my first appointment at the hospital today after referral by the opticians back in November. Had initial test then drops to dilate my pupils, at which point they realised I was supposed to have a field test, but of course too late now. Had scan and pictures then finally in to see the doctor, which is when things really went down hill.
After a very quick look at my eyes he said they looked fine, and any inflammation was probably down to my arthritis. Mentioned the reason I had gone to the opticians which was rainbow beams from bright lights. Was told it was probably migraine. These beams have been there constantly since August around bright lights, especially at night, and no headaches! Was then told it must be an issue withy glasses, although opticians did check them.
Then mentioned my field test results from the opticians, ok with my right eye but had to repeat some, almost non existent in my left. Pressures ok in both eyes. Again he seemed to suggest it was my glasses. Admittedly he did seem annoyed they missed doing the field test, but not exactly reassuring.
End result is I have to back in a few weeks and do it all again.
Hopefully I get listened to next time and they actually look at why I was there. Considering going private.

Welcome to the world of consultants never listening to you.Mine didn't even check my medical record before prescribing beta blocker eye drops for raised eye pressure ( which one consultant had said was Glaucoma but this one said it isn't).
Private is the way to go. Unfortunately, as I don't have transport, I can't get to a private clinic as they are too awkwSrd by public transport in my area.
As Maximi says, welcome to the world of consultants not listening to you. Consultants sat and watched me losing all my peripheral vision back in the late 1980s becuase I didn't have high eye pressures. I went private and I've been looked after expertly and listened to ever since. It's not right but it is a reality and at the end of the day we have to do what we feel is best for us. If you can afford it, see a consultant privately, at least for an initial diagnosis and management plan. It will be worth it for peace of mind.
the first appointment I had last March the Consultant basically called me a liar when I said I’d lost sight over night. He then threw a prescription for drops at me and said “you’ll need these until you die, you just have glaucoma, we’ll see you in clinic every 3 months. After 4 cancelled appointments I gave in and paid to see a consultant privately, he is not convinced that I have glaucoma at all and kindly emailed the NHS clinic to ask them to see me urgently and sent across the results of tests he had done. I’ve now had an MRI with contrast and have been referred to a neurologist. I’d highly recommend paying if you can, for me it was well worth the money.
