antidepressant with glaucoma

NAngleClosedGlaucoma profile image

I had been on Sertraline for few years but since this diagnosis, after acute angle closure in both eyes, laser treatment, cataracts removed in one eye and taking eye drops daily, I have switched to VENLAFAXINE antidepressant as it’s an SNRI rather than an SSRI. This apparently does not raise IOP. Can anyone help me in this regard? Am I right in this?

I am on Sertraline, I asked my consultant about it, she said it was fine to take with glaucoma.

hi

I have just been diagnosed with narrow angles and have been told to stop taking setraline.

This is what I heard too. I suppose it’s only if you have narrow angle closures that causes the concern

From what I’ve researched - it can also vary on whether you have ‘anatomical’ narrow angles or ‘functional’ narrow angles so it may be worth checking that too. Xx

Ooh never heard of those types must start reading up again. I hate doing too much research online as it always seems so conflicting!

I know what you mean, I’ve found this entire process VERY frustrating for that very reason x

Hi there. Antidepressants can be a problem if you have narrow angles/angle closure glaucoma due to the way it can cause the pupil to dilate. I'm not actually sure on whether this goes for both SNRI as well as SSRI or not. As you have had laser treatment, you might be ok to take them but you will need to check this with your consultant as only they will be able to tell you whether you can or not.

Okay thanks so much for your reply. I am seeing my GP on Friday so I’ll bring it up with him first and take it from there. Regards
