strange taste in mouth

Hello All,

I haven’t posted for a while thankfully….

I have treated narrow angle glaucoma, have had 2 rounds of laser iridotomy, and I am using Cosopt Preservative Free eye drops twice a day since 28.11.2023 to control my eye pressures. I can always taste the eye drops after I have put them in and always put my fingers in the corner of my eyes when I out the eye drops in. But this last week I have a much stronger metallic taste in my mouth all the time. I can taste my food, I have a negative Covid test… but the taste just lingers. I have seen a health practitioner who has advised a saline mouth wash and a sea salt nasal spray twice a day for two weeks, which I started yesterday. I am also at the stage of perimenopause/menopause… so altogether a bit of everything going on! Just wondered if anyone else has experienced this.

My oral hygiene seems to be ok no bleeding gums etc…but I am trying to establish the last time my teeth had a scale and clean…. I think it might have been early 2023, I last visited the dentist Sept 2024 and nothing was flagged up.

Any thoughts as usual would be gratefully received. I would have thought if it was the eye drops I would have had this taste sooner…

Many thanks

Katy

Hi! Responding to your metal taste in the mouth mystery. I sometimes get a metallic taste in my mouth. I suspect mine is part of my allergic reaction to something inhaled. It’s one of the symptoms indicating for me that it’s an allergic reaction and not a cold starting.

More generally metallic taste can by trace iron from trace blood in the saliva or mucus. Could you have a sinus issue or other infection of the respiratory system? Inflammation in the sinus or nasel passages might lead to strange tastes and smells. I think acid reflux from stomach can do same.

Not sure this is allowed as not the right forum but I couldn’t take HRT but I scaled back on work gave myself more care & time and took supplement Menomin (mainly omega 3 with other minerals and vitamins so won’t halm your eyes either).

Hello, thank you for your reply how long did yours last for?

I’m trying to rack my brains as to how this started…

The only few things I have come up with are:

1. When it was really cold a couple weeks ago, I had a ginger tea and it was quite hot at first, then each day after drinking the tea I had a funny taste. So I stopped drinking it over a week ago.

2. I have also been swimming a couple of times, and I haven’t been for a while and I wondered if it could be that.

thanks again…

Katy

My metallic taste only lasts a one to two days just when I initially have the allergic reaction. Once I’ve removed the trigger I usually start to recover and taste returns to normal. I use saline sprays into my nose to calm things down as my allergies are from airborne items: dust, unknown dog dander; and some pollens. Once the allergy is under control the metallic taste disappears. 👍🏻

Was the taste always with you from the eye drops?

Yes it was

If you don’t mind me asking….

Did it just come on suddenly or had you always had it since starting the eye drops?

How did you establish it was the eye drops?

How did/do you work with the taste?

Thank you…

Yes it was when i took them straight away

Then I would drink water or Hot drink

To get rid off taste

Take care

Thank you, so did the taste go away after a drink?

Mine always has gone away, until the last week or so, I’ve just got a horrible taste all the time. I can taste my food, although water doesn’t taste very nice though!

I’m just trying to establish where it’s coming from if it’s a virus, menopause or to do with my eye drops…! It’s just so frustrating.

Thank you again I appreciate you taking the time to come back to me.

It was only when I took the drops

And didn’t last long . But some times I was

On some drops like 6 Times a day so taste

Was quite annoying but like you say it could

Be from another source like you mentioned

Some people may come forward with

Other ideas that’s what a love about this group

Good luck 👍👍🇳🇱🇺🇦

Hi Katy

I have a few friends who have complained of a metallic taste in their mouth and it was related to the menopause and HRT so it could be worth you looking into this.

Best of luck!

Thank you, that would make sense, another lovely thing for us to deal with aren’t we lucky! I just can’t think it can be eye drops as I’ve been taking eye drops now for over 2 years and I usually do get some after taste but it disappears. I’m now not sure what this taste is… but it’s driving me mad!

I’ve been on eye drops since the age of 24 and I’m now 55 and sometimes I can taste the drops shortly afterwards but definitely not metallic taste. Would recommend HRT - yes the joys!!
