I am having an eye shunt fitted and cataracts sorted in my left eye next week and I wondered if anyone else has had the same? Just wondered how it went and what the recovery time is? I’m 58yrs so wasn’t sure if anyone around my age has also has this done too
Thanks in advance 👍

Hi yes I have had it done. Nothing to worry about. If you wear glasses you may need to have the glass taken out of the side operated on. It says 4 to 6 weeks before you can have your eyes tested for new specs. You will probably have to put drops in for about 4 weeks but that is not a problem. It is all quite straight forward! I am 75 and have now had both done. You are unaware of the shunt. Take care! Glaucoma UK is a great site even if you do not have glaucoma!
I've not had it done personally but a lady I know in Australia in her late 80s has had it done and its been a great success she doesn't need to use drops anymore.good luck ..
Hi Bazzer I haven't had the shunt done but had numerous other ops and procedures , I'm sure if you follow the consultants instructions after your op you will be fine and good luck
Hi, I have normal tension glaucoma in both eyes. I had cataract op and Hydrus shunt in my right eye in Dec 2022, aged 65. The cataract op has greatly improved my vision. U can now see to thread my sewing machine needle! After the op, I did notice my vision became more blurry after the course of steroids finished. I went to Eye Emergency and was diagnosed with 'water at the back of the eye', ie cystoid macular oedema. This was treated with anti inflammatory drops and more steroid drops. It settled, then I got some slight blurriness again, which was more inflammation. In the front of the eye this time. More drops, and it settled. So my progress was kind of two steps forward and one step back, but all was eventually well. Unfortunately the pressure wasn't taken down low enough so I am back on Dorzolamide and Bimatoprost. What I found a bit anxiety-making was not knowing whether the fluctuations in vision were just a normal part of the eye 'settling' or were a sign that something was wrong. Always worth getting your concerns checked out.
So I had the procedure done today and it was a little uncomfortable at times but so much easier than I thought. The most important thing is that I make sure I follow the aftercare instructions and then hopefully it will halt my vision loss which would be an amazing outcome
If there’s anything I can help you with please let me know 👍
It is being considered for me to have shunts in both eyes and possibly another SLT as the Consultants think that it is the two lots of eye drops for the glaucoma that are causing causing dry eyes resulting in repeated eye infections over the pst two and a half years. I have found reading this post very helpful and reassuring. Thank you for posting it, Bazzer65.
