Dry eye medication

For several years since eye surgery I have been prescribed eye lubricants.

The prescriptions always say Thealoz Duo Gel yet I have always been given the Thealoz Duo UD even when I questioned this several times. Recently I was given the Gel form and nothing else. Of course this is excellent at night but very blurry during the day. Having the Gel has definitely helped the dry eyes so I now need far fewer drops during the day.

It has taken me about 6 attempts to finally get the result of being issued with both the Duo UD and the Duo Gel.

I think the packaging is so similar that in a busy pharmacy they just read Thealoz Duo and perhaps are unaware of the Gel. Has anyone else had this problem ? I feel if I had received the gel years ago then my corneas would perhaps have less damage.

Had glaucoma and cataract surgery approx 5 years ago. I use Ganfort eye drops daily and pressures seem to be fine.

I was prescribed Theoloz 3/4 years ago which helped with dry eye. I had an optician friend who also had glaucoma and to help overnight he suggested I should also use the gel version at night only . I have found this successful for the last few years.

Thank you Tigdad,

Yes, you have both found the gel helpful at night, which confirms my findings. Do you get the Thealoz Duo UD as well ? If so does the pharmacy get in a muddle?

If I have evidence of other pharmacies muddling the drops and the gel then I will contact the manufacturer. There are far too many similar packages for all sorts of drugs out there. In the past I was dispensed a glaucoma drug totally different to my prescription, in fact I was allergic to it. That packet was almost identical to my usual medication.

I always carefully check the name on the drops now, but with blurred sight it would be easy to rely on the colour and design of the packet.

I found it best to order UD and Gel at the same time - usually 6 boxes UD to 1 box of GEL. Should be clear to pharmacist that there is a difference

I suffer from dry eyes after several procedures on my eyes & was proscribed Hylo-Forte & Hypromellose lubricants. These work ok through the day but my problem is during the night when I awake I cannot open my eyes they are so dry. I have been prescribed with two lots of night ointments the latest been Hylo Night eye neither of which have been successfull.

Hello Transporterman,

Have you tried Thealoz Duo GEL ? I find it makes a real benefit at night which then seems to remain most of the day. The problems I have had....It is a fiddly gel to apply as it comes in a small plastic unit dose, so does take quite a bit of perseverence to get it out ! Then it makes the eyes blurred for a few minutes, and my pharmacy used to get it muddled with the Thealoz Duo UD drops( even when I explained and the prescription stated the Gel)

It may be worth trying it . My Optician calls it the "Rolls Royce " of dry eye drops.

Best wishes
