Hello everyone,

We are receiving more calls on our Helpline regarding B3. A few callers have said their consultants are recommending it.

I know a few members on here have started to use it, so I thought I would share a paper with you by UCL and Moorfields. The research will last 5 years.

Thanks Trish, I have started taking B3 nicotinamide recently (can be bought online at Amazon), I have read some studies that suggest taking 1.5 grams a day which seems like a lot to me, I've just been taking 500mg a day. Any idea what the recommended dosage is for Glaucoma eyes?

Professor Gus Gazzard of Moorfield gave a talk on Normal Tension Glaucoma at one of our Digital Support Groups and he talks about B3, and the dosage is mentioned. You may not have NTG but the information on B3 will be helpful.

In the talk he suggests 1g+ if you have glaucoma and can tolerate it.

You can also discuss with your consultant as well.

Unfortunately the link doesnt work on here. If you look up Glaucoma UK on YouTube and click on videos, you will see all of our previous DGSG's.

Type Normal Tension Glaucoma on the search, the video will come up. Alternatively you can scroll through,

Thank you for the information about B3 from UCL and Moorfields.

I started 500mg Nicotinamide daily in March 2022.

At the end of April I had an unexplained arm bruise and the optitian found 2 optic disc bleeds. I stopped taking Vitamin B then and have had no further bleeds or unexplained bruises.

Previous to eye surgery I had several optic bleeds but since the last microshunt implant in March 2021 all the bleeds had stopped until after starting the B3.

I realise this could be a coincidence and hopefully maybe even a rare side effect, but if anyone else has these problems after starting B3 then it may be helpful to tell their consultant or e mail Prof Gazzard.

Hope the trial goes well for the majority with Glaucoma.

hI Trish/All,

I fid this all a bit vague. Using the label Nicotinamide does not describe a specific B3 precurser, so although I believe the Australian study used Niacinamide, using the correct scientific name would give much more clarity to that which is complicated.

Vitamin B3 can be derived from Niacin, Niacinamide, Nicotinic Acid, Nicotinamide Mononucleotide, Nicotinamide Riboside, and Tryptophan. All can theoretically be used to enhance the bodies storage of Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide (NAD).

Niacinamideis the less toxic Niacin and is the cheapest and plentiful supplement but at the levels of 1.5 to 3 grams daily it id likely to exert some adverse effects on the GI system of many, as it does to me at 1.5 grams a day. Riboside is very expensive as it has a patent, and Mononucleotide is expensve too but I feel is less toxic and available in many dosing forms such as sublingual, powders and capsules.

I am still work in progress but I take the powder in water with food and the sublingual lozenges after eatubg in the day. I don't yet have any significant imprpement but I am severely impaired and have just lost some more due to hyperkalemia. I will reprt any respite from yjis appalling affliction if it happens.

I’m a bit confused. I also take B3 and have just come across this article on FitEyes.com that states it increased pressures in some instances- pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/187...

The article you mention was from 2008, and it does not specify whether the person was asked to stop taking the glaucoma eye drops and just try the B3. Recent research shows it can be beneficial, but as far as i am aware this is to work alongside the glaucoma eyedrops prescribed and not to replace them.

Researchers have looked at how mitochondria – parts of cells that produce energy – affect how vison could be damaged by eye pressure. The nerve cells in the eye and other cells in the retina need a large amount of energy to function and survive. Older age is associated with mitochondria everywhere in the body working less well and producing less energy.

Hello Trish! I was going through all the posts about Vitamin B 3 and Glaucoma and still do not understand which precursor is best to take? Nicotinamide or Nicotinamide Mononucleotide or Nicotinamide Riboside? In the pilot study at Moorfields which Nicotinamide is being used? It was my understanding that the study in Australia Nicotinamide Mononucleotide was used. I guess if I am going to take a supplement I want to be sure I am taking the right one! If you can clarify this I would be grateful. Thanks!! 😊
