Trab Positivity

I had a trab 4 weeks ago and a complete rework 1 week later due to very low pressure. It hasnt been easy. I went in high risk as my pressure was 50 so I guess I wasnt going to have an easy ride of it. We are now getting somewhere but Im not there yet. Yesterday a member of my family who I rarely see visited and her story says how successful this operation can be. She is now 74 and presented with crazy high eye pressures when she was 40 years old. She had laser iridotomy, loads of drops but nothing worked. She then had a trabulectomy and 34 years on it still works. She never needed reworks or had any issues and she regards her vision to be very good even though the high pressure had affected her sight. Just thought I'd throw this out to those who might be worried about having a trab done. She said recovery wasnt easy but was so well worth it.

Like you I had to have a rework a week after the original trabeculectomy then developed a sudden onset cataract so three weeks later a cataract operation. Eighteen months later the pressure’s still low so worth the difficult recovery. Hope yours goes well now.

thanks for Sharing your story . Am Phil 45 I’ve had the procedure 5 and a bit week ago . All seem to have gone well had one Of my stitches come out so ended up with it leaking. It has been knitting it self back together . Good to hear about your Family member and how it lasted so long and still is.

Its not easy is it Phil. Im 4 weeks today and it still feels pretty horrible and vision is very blurred. But I know it can take 2 to 3 months to feel normal again. Im a bit of a worrier so between appointments I worry about what might be happening . Doesnt help when youve got too much time on your hands. Ive noticed its not so bad when Im busy. Hope yours continues and still works in 30 years time!!

Hi Beaudidly

Don’t despair- the after effects and recovery time are much worse than the procedure itself. I have had trabs in both eyes, the second one combined with cataract removal. That was five months ago and I’m still not quite there yet as the new lens may need lasering. All I can say is hang on in there - good news is my IOP is really low in both eyes and I haven’t lost any more vision, so things are looking up. Wishing you a safe recovery xx

Thank you Redshoes 15. I know the surgeon put extra sutures in mine because we had problems and he said that is what is causing me so much discomfort. Also the blurring doesnt seem to be improving but I did read that can be caused by astigmatism due to tight sutures. Best not to think/worry/google too much I guess! Glad youre getting there x

Ah yes - the stitches can cause a lot of discomfort. Mine did too and the blurriness took ages. But take heart, things will get better soon. xx

I’ve had two Trabs when I was 14 and 15im 38 now. One eye is still eye drop free.

My other one is blind but because of a faild cataract surgery. Had I not gone in to that operation that eye would’ve still be stable with one eye drop.
