Ptosis following Trabeculectomy

I’m on week 8 following my first Trabeculectomy and still have a droopy eyelid (ptosis) - I know this is a very common factor and was expecting it but just wondering (praying) that this will resolve and go back to normal on its own? I think roughly the 3 month point is what I’ve read in terms of full recovery. I know what my eye looks like is the least of my problems in the grand scheme of things especially if eye sight is the price but I feel really self conscious. Furthermore, is it due to swelling of the bleb hence why this should reduce and the drooping resolve? Any reassurance welcome!

Hello.

Ptosis, although not common, can occur after Trabeculectomy. The eye lid can return to how it was prior to the procedure naturally. If not, cosmetic surgery can be done to lift it.

Hello Eyehelp5,

Although I had two shunts implanted and not trabeculectomy, I also had a droopy eye lid after the first operation nearly two years ago.

It very slowly improved and the consultant said that the NHS would only do any further surgery if my vision was impaired.

Luckily now it is only very slight so that I have usualy forgotten about it. Most people would not know. Many people used to remark on my two red eyes from the eye drops prior to surgery...so now I no longer look as though I have been crying.

Do hope your eyelid recovers in time.

Best wishes

Thank you so much for replying. Yes I’ve had the crying comments too so perhaps this is a step up! Really glad yours got better - think we are our own worst critics with these things anyway.

Hi,

I also had mild ptosis post surgery. My eyelid returned to normal soon after I stopped the steroid drops.

Oh that’s really interesting re stopping steroids as I’m still on x4 daily - I will live in hope! Glad yours returned to normal this is good news. Thanks so much for replying. x
